the 03 4.0 is a solid motor. treat her nice, change the oil every 3k, dont beat on it, and keep up on the "little things", and it will last forever. lol. awesome video response. i bout pissed myself

I've got 203,xxx on my '02 4.0 and the thing starts and runs like its brand new. I have every maintenance record for every little thing done to it. I am the second owner and have put 50,000 miles on it in three years. Damn good trucks, these 4.0 SOHC Rangers are.

i dont know too much about the v6s but thats a crapload of miles. my 98 has half of that

StxDangerRanger 03-10-2012 10:21 AM

If the maintenance was kept up on it and you don't beat on it.
It'll last you a long time.

a guy I work with has an '03 Mazda B4000 (same engine) with 350k on it. He is a traveling salesman, so they are all highway miles, but he is just now starting to have a little transmission trouble. He's never had any big engine trouble.

One month if you beat on it like what Bobby Brown did to Houston.

Tough as nails

Almost 239,000 miles and runs great. Makes a little noise when I first start it up but not all the time and goes away within a minute or two.

Was the timing chain tensioner issues ("4.0 Death Rattle") resolved by 2003? Kinda curious because I have a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer with that engine. Runs fine at 70k miles, but I wonder about keeping it because I hear about the timing chain issues. Apparently whole engine has to be pulled and torn down to fix it.

Nope, 2005 was the year it was sorted out.
