I did a quick search to see if anyone has done a thread on this and no one has. At least not for a few years lol.
My 2011 Ranger gets 14 in town and 18 on the highway. Ouch! Full size F-150s get that! And Ram 1500s with a Hemi get 20!
I was wondering if there is any low costs ways to improve mileage. I know one major way would be to take the lead out of my foot and drive sensible. Iv watched Powerblock TV and watched them guys take a jacked up Ram from 8 mpg to 16 mpg. I dang near sh*t myself! One thing they did that I will do to mine is remove the mechanical fan and replace it with an electric one. Everything else they did, didnt pertain to my stock height Ranger. They replaced their axles with some out of a 3/4 ton with 4.10 gears and that helped. But 4.10 gears wouldnt do me a lick of good. And they also replaced their auto-lockouts with some mechanical lockouts (I dunno the technical name, but they installed the ones where you have to get out and turn the **** to put it in 4 wheel drive). I could benefit from that but that was a grand or so and not to mention you need some mechanical know-how.
Any other ideas?

I get 20-22 mpg in the city and 13 on the highway with 4.56 gearing

 

by the time you even up the amount of money you spend on upgrades to save...and actually save money from the upgrades..you're probably losing. Little things like regular maintenance, although your 2011 is brand new, and maybe a air filter, headers, exhaust will give you minimal gains. I just swapped out 3.73's for 4.10s and the improvement in power is there..but the gas mileage is comparable. Maybe look into a tuner. The electric fan will free up a couple horses..but you're not going to see much in the gas mileage. As well as, you may risk overheating if not wired up properly. Rangers gas mileage sucks. period. Well not my 2.3...but the 4.0 sucks. so just deal with it, dont waste money on stuff thats not going to make that big of a difference

Well my truck is completely stock. 4.0 SOHC, 4x4, 3.73 w/ trac lok.
And I plan on putting some goodies on it but mostly for HP gains, not mileage, even though its a nice plus :)

 

And I traded my 4.0 Mustang for my 4.0 Ranger and knew mileage wouldnt be great. But honestly, I doubt ill go back to a car now lol. I had a 2003 F-150 King Ranch, crew cab, 4x4, 6 inch Fabtech lift, 20 in rims wrapped in 36x12.50 Nitto Terra Grapplers. O my she was a beautiful mud slinger! 9 mpg city, 12 mpg highway. So honestly, I dont mind my 14 city, 18 highway lol

 

Love my Little Ranger 25 city and 30 hwy.

 

I get 17.5 lifted on 35's with 4.10's and a 4.0. I can't complain I think that's damn good with a lifted truck.

 

get a custom tune for MPG I did! know I get 20!!!!

 

Question: For those of you that have larger than stock tires or changed your rear gear did you recalibrate your speedo? If not your MPG claims are bogus.

OMG!!! Are you serious? Jesus good thing this isn't my first day on the ol' ranger website and I didnt re-tune my truck for 35's and most on here with 35's know about the .06 increase

 

Lets see stock tires biggest available from Ford (255/70r16) 30.2 in tall 689rpm,
35x12.5r16 34.1 in tall, 599 rpm

BS that is a 7 mph difference at 55 mph

I agree with HeloMec...most people actually DONT know the difference when going up in tire size. I mean they know it throws their speedo off...but not by how much.

I found that on my 2.3 when i went up to 31s with stock gears my speedo was off by 10%...now with the 4.10s im right about back to normal. im sure most people with 33s are more than .6 off. and yeah i do understand you were being sarcastic with your numbers. Im just agreeing with HeloMec on the whole bogus numbers in the MPG thing.

Before I started tearing apart my 4.0, I was getting around 17.5 combined, and about 16 in the winter, with 3.73 and 31 inch tires. I haven't driven the truck for about a month now, and it'll take some time for the computer-battery reset, relearning dealio before I know for sure what I'm getting.

 

BTW if we had larger tires than stock the MPG claims would be way in the dirt... However I have 33/12.50s 4x4 and 4.0sohc I have a performance tune and if I drive like a old lady I can get 19.5mpg Im gonna get a Economy tune sometime soon and see what more I can get out of it... If gas wasn't so much I wouldn't care what my mileage is but its my daily and I drive alot.

 

The two cheapest mods for better MPG is to change your stock filter to K&N and to do a Cat Back exhaust or even just a low restriction muffler but I'd be carefull on what you do because of your warranty on your truck.

OR...don't buy a car and drive off in a Ranger (truck) with a 2.3 Duratec - even with an automatic and 4.10's I still get 27mpg on E10 and 29mpg with "real" gas. Have no doubt that I can improve to 30-31 with a custom 87 tune and switch to Low Rolling Resistance tires when the factory tires need replacing.

 

That's about what I got stock....manual 4cyl with 3.73s

2.3L would help even more. the 2.5L is a little thirstier.

Actually a guy came on here with his 07 on 32s and he couldn't figure out why his gas mileage had dropped so bad. he said he was calculating based off his trip meter. And we are like "Are you correcting your speedo and odometer for the tires size increase?" and he was "ohhhhh"
