whats up guys. noob here. i have been reading alot of posts for a couple weeks not, learned alot of good stuff. thanks. I was wondering where all you guys learned automechanics. I would like to learn but i havent had an opportunity.

 

taking things apart and realizing "oh sh*t! i need to figure out how to get this back together so i can make it to work in the morning"

 

thats awesome. I wouldnt be able to do that. i would have to call in. ha.

 

Eh, I just pick things up. My Dad helped alot, grandpa friends etc. The only way you learn is to get your hands dirty and figure things out.

 

A good portion of what I have learned so far has been from R-F. I also cant say enough good things about the members in my area who have taught me ALOT about my truck and generally what everything is. Trust me stick around this site for a while and you will start hearing and learning a lot. Try and meet some people in your area with knowledge and bribe them with food......im sure they will help you work on the truck . Doing the repair work with them is the best way to learn it!!!!

 

I have learned how to fix a lot of things on the ranger here. This site is priceless. The general auto stiff from friends, grandpa, and trial and error.

Same here, all self taught, I do alittle bit of reading before hand on how to do it and then just go for it

 

I learned from other people showing me.

I then got real interested and took some automotive classes and diesel classes at our local technical school

I am a visual learner though. buddy of mine is gonna show me how to do body work when the weather gets it act together

 

yeah. i plan to take some automechanics courses at the local community college, but it is kinda hard getting out at 6pm and having a ton of traffic. gonna take an arc welding class first. seems fun.

 

Thiis site, google and my garage. Read how to do it online and then went and did it. If something messed up I just called some one on here lol

 

I have always been curios about mechanical/electrical stuff. When I was younger I would always take everything apart to see how it worked. I used to watch my dad work on cars. I always watch shows like trucks and gearz. I also learned a lot but just tearing into stuff.

 

HAHA this is pretty funny because my buddies and I were talking about this today.

I learned from my dad, books, magazines, interwebz and prolly the best way was by doing it not by reading

 

buy a turd....fix it or you're walking..... (that's basically what i was told)

i learned really quick......and now everyone i know calls me when their $h!t breaks

i also helped my dad maintain all of his work vehicles...from chevy trucks to dodge mini-vans.

and helping my grandad restore old cars helped a lot when i was a little kid
i liked taking stuff apart and he would show me how to put it back together and how it worked.

 

I bought a 96 vw jetta for $200 when I was 14.

Took it apart. Alot. Put it back together, alot, finally got it running.

Homeschooledddd.

Now I'm 19, and a service manager at pepboys.

edit: nvm I'm 20 today. lol

 

Worked on my own stuff, ran through UTI (easy smeesy if you have decent know-how), but the only way to get a decent foot in the door. Went through BMW S.T.E.P and am at a dealership.

Getting your hands dirty will only teach you so much. Todays electrical and dirty hands will leave you lookin like a fool lol

I do try and teach any buddy who is willing to learn something though. Rather than my friend offering to pay me for something, i'd rather him turn the wrench and me help him along. Works out better that way.

 

Before I started doing auto-mechanics at school, I just started out by being out in the garage with my dad and brother helping them do stuff. Bought a piece of crap dirt bike and had to keep fixin it at age 13. Then I bought a car and repair manual and started some trial and error when I got my license.

 

2 years of 3 hours/day Vo-Tech classes, several N.I.A.T. training courses and a whole lot of just watching and learning from my dad.

 

I'm 35 and started working in my dads autobody shop at the age of 10. From there I went into the Mustang scene and became a 79-93 Fox-body specialist running my own deal for 4yrs.Growing up with a dad that's an autobody guy we always had a pickup,Mustang,Camaro,Cuda or something kickin around the shop that he was restoring.I look bad on those days and it was the best times of my life,working with the guys in the body shop and just enjoying cars.Now I'm a marketing guy in the automotive industry,and I love it.lol

 

Read a lot on here, friends helping me, and me doing it myself, hands on is how I learn. Plus I'm going to school for automotive this fall.
