Well think Im getting rid of the ranger

problem after problem. rear main seal is leaking again and just becoming a PIA to me now.

Thinking of getting a bike. Getting setup for the test now,

Truck is just becoming expensive now, inursence repairs, downtime. With a bike, fixing it is much easier, gas is cheaper, no insurence. I also have dad's truck to drive when I cant have the bike out.

What do you guys think.

And yes i have ridden before, dirtbikes and a 750 gixxr along with 1000RR i been on just recently

Looking at a 2004 Hyabusa with 6898 miles on it.

its a used vehicle its old it needs TLC all things require maintness if your looking for a vehicle that doesn't lease... other then that your stuck with it for the rest of your life.. and a bike is a toy its not always practical....

iam sorry but i have read posts like this before i have no personal tolerance for ***** about having to maintness a vehicle its a fact of life that needs to be done all the time.. give the truck what it needs it keeps going good..

A bike should be your second form of transportation.

....and you still need insurance for a bike.

a bike isnt any good when it gets cold or it gets bad weather id either fix the truck or get something else in the line of a car/truck and the guy who said maintenance is part of the package is right hell even you need your tune-ups every now and again

I have an the f150 to drive around or transport the bike when needed, or for bad wheather, and its new (05) so no maintnence other then oil change.

No need for insurence on a bike, If i crash my body will be totaled with it most likely.

Maintnence gets old, when I have to drop a tranny for just a stupid seal :|.

Dont have the time for it

i had a busa, yea it's cool and everything...but in fl it sucks

in the rain (which is everyday in the summer) you get wet. You have to worry about it getting stolen all the time, and you can die too easy. It's just too dangerous, thats why i don't have mine anymore.

Bikes are 2nd form of transportation. Just buy another ranger, just newer and 4wd, you won't regret it.

Yea, even driving in my truck, which is a lot higher than most cars, I get cut off by certain people. Just driving home from work some old guy cut me off (q-tip) and he didn't even notice, if i was on a bike, I woulda hit him for sure, I almost hit him in my truck!!

But you CAN stop a lot faster on a bike, it's just up to reaction time.

I love bikes. But if it's your DD you will hate it, been there done that. I didn't live in FL then, but it was still my DD for school/errands. And it was only for 5 months and it was such a PITA. It was cool, and it's cool for chicks, but thats why I have a truck...I get chicks w/ the truck anyway!!! (jk about the chicks but it sounds funny)

Yep. Florida its very dangerous, escipally with how horriable all the drivers are.

Ill let it play things on, im just sick of the wear and tear on the ranger, sure I love working on things, But I HATE fixing things a second time, espically when I pay almost 2k for it to be fixed.

Bikes are all around much cheaper, gas, matinence, fuel, and insurance are all cheap as hell... But you need to be careful as they're very dangerous and for god's sake don't drive a bike in the rain.

Maybe you should keep the Ranger, get a bike and when you have some extra cash do a 302 swap

just oil change?? you do realize you have bearings that need to be greased, valves that need to be checked for clearance, there is a little more to it than just oil

^^^ On an 05 u sure as hell best not need to do all that. On anything you should just need to replace fluids on regular schedule. I dont see a Ford needing more then that until 100k then maybe an alternator or something.

So let me get this straight.... you do not have a motorcycle license now so this means you have NO experience on the road. For your first bike you buy a bike that does 200 MPH of fthe showroom floor. Okay, let see if I spell this correctly... DUMBASS.
You aren't getting insurance on it because you will NEVER survive an accident where the bike damages someone elses vehicle or property? Say goodbye to your F-150 and anything else after the lawsuit. Not everyone dies in a M/C accident.
I am not like the other posters, I ride. I rode from RI to CA in 3 days last year. I know what the traffic is like in a whole lot of places. It not always the other person.
M/C endorsement on your license doesn't mean you can ride it means you past a test.

I have read some real stupid posts in my life but this one is now on top.

Yeah, I lived and rode in FL for 7 months in the Orlando/St Cload area. You have a LOT of growing up to do, if you survive.

i really don't see why you are worried about a stupid rear main seal. it's a seal.. not a bearing. you don't have to replace the stupid thing all the time. let it drip a little oil. it ain't hurtin anything. unless you just never check the oil level.

Another little bit of info for ya, 9 times out of 10 when you finance any type of vehicle you are required by the bank to have insurance.

Dumb ****. read my first post have rode before.

****ing idoit. Im not braggin simply telling what I was doing. Take the tampon out and ****ing relax, Im not some speed junkie superman wheelie, do a 180 in a school zone kid.

Just because the bike does 200mph, does that mean it is the required speed I must go ? Do I need to drop my knee and drag the pegs very turn ? Sounds to me like your one of the typical morons who does 150Mph everywhere they go, reving and burning out doing wheelies in traffic to get attention, I know what Im doing, Im very well aware of dangers and cons, I didn't wake up and decied GEE im going to go by a 500lb sportbike.

Congradulations on rideing in Florida.

*****.

Im just worried it's going to become catastrophioc(sp) and just dump oil all over the place while im driving one day.

Because it keeps leaking all over my driveway :(.

Shop took the truck in, Ill get it back Monday morning.

Good luck with the bike man. I know what it's like to have a truck with problems. That's why I got rid of my old one and started fresh with something new. Be safe on the bike!

I know you already bought the bike, but here's my take on your situation:
-All vehicles are a crapshoot. You can get a car that lasts 300,000 miles with only tires, brakes, and oil changes, while other vehicles will last 10,000 miles and need a new transmission after getting the engine rebuilt and the differential replaced. But based on statistics MOST vehicles fall between those two extremes.
-ALL vehicles need preventative maintenance to both run and continue running throughout their life. Most of this maintenance is common: brakes, tires, oil changes, timing belt in a DOHC, fluid top offs, bearings, windshield wipers, bulbs, coolant drain/refill, etc. Some of this maintenance can be uncommon: your rear main seal, axles, differentials, transmission replacement, new engine, etc. Some vehicles may need the latter, others don't, so the cost can be expensive depending on plain luck, and/or what kind of vehicle it is. But considering that you're servicing a ford ranger and not a ferrari F-50, it should be relatively affordable.

Personally, I don't think a rear main seal does NOT seem like the kind of maintenance that falls under that common category. I doubt most people have to replace theirs. This may be expensive, but if it needs to get done, it needs to get done.

Now comes the issue of labor costs for repair: a lot of the major servicing required on a vehicle is complicated; most home mechanics don't have the appropriate tools to get them done. If you're only going to use a special tool once, sometimes it's not worth the hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars to get it. So you drop off it off at a shop to get the work done, but now it's going to take a loooong time to get it back, and you have to pay for the extensive labor costs.

Next is the operational costs of the truck: insurance, gas, parts for maintenance, etc. Add that all up, and yes, owning a truck is expensive. Heck, owning ANY vehicle can be expensive.

Now let's compare it to a bike:
-it's more dangerous in the event of an accident, and due to the increased hazard of road quality since you're only on 2 wheels: hands down
-bikes can STILL be a crapshoot in terms of maintenance
-bikes STILL require preventative maintenance
-on the long run, bikes can be more expensive for certain items: if you buy tires for a busa, it's going to run you at least $100/tire (if you get a bargain, cheap quality tire), plus $30/tire for mounting and balancing...not to mention it'll take a motorcycle shop ALL day (if not a week) to get it done...do this for a car, and you'll get in and out in a day
-bike tires only last 7-8,000 miles, so you'll be buying more expensive tires more frequently
-bikes require valve adjustment: full servicing at a shop can be upwards of $400
-bikes require chain/sprocket replacement every 15,000 miles

Now there's probably a lot that I'm missing here about bike maintenance, but in any case a busa isn't going to get great gas mileage because it's NOT a vehicle aimed at economy: it's designed to be fast...granted it'll be better than a ranger, it won't be much better than a civic/corolla, etc.

So if you're getting rid of the ranger because of costs of ownership, and maintenance, then really, you can't top the long term economical costs of a 4-cylinder econobox.

Get the busa if you want to go fast, and have fun as a secondary vehicle. If you need a primary commuter that's economical, get a toyota corolla or a honda civic.

Or be like me: save up for a toyota tacoma (based on statistics, will last longer without the need for major corrective maintenance like rear main seals, transmissions, etc.), with a 2.7L 4-cyl and get a smaller bike (5-600cc) for fun and economy (my bike gets 50+mpg on some days). I use BOTH for my commute based on the weather and carrying needs. And when I need to get servicing done on either vehicles, I can drive both to the service station and drive/ride the other one home.
