4X4... why didn't I

Lately I have benn wondering why I didn't buy a 4X4. I love my truck, the sonic blue is awesome. I really wished I would have got an 4X4 Edge in sonic blue.

Hmmmmmm. Oh well... I am only about 6 months into owning the damn thing to. Ouch.

Welcome to my world, Kyle. I bought my 2002 Ranger with no intention of offroading. Now I'm more less stuck with it for another two and a half years and I'm doing some limited building of it so I can continue to offroad it. Look at my avatar and you'll see I do take it offroad. My cardomain site (link in sig) has more info on how I've built it so far.

I hooked up with some guys locally via forums like this one and they talked me into taking my street truck offroad -- and the rest is history!

I paid my truck off several months back, but my b/f just bought a 99 F350 4x4 that will probably be our main trail truck... we go camping, fishing, hunting, and quadding a lot. I foresee limited offroad use of my truck. It will basically be demoted to "city truck" (the SD is a s/c longbox... a little big to park in town).

I've been seriously considering getting a similarly equipped Explorer so we can have something to drive around town with friends. It's kind of hard to carry extra passengers with the dinky little jumpseats. But it would HAVE to be 4L 5 spd 4x4 with manual hubs.

It makes me sad to think of getting rid of my truck, but sadder to think my truck will see even less offroad use than it did last year. This bites. I hate doing the "why didn't I buy this instead" thing.

Why didn't you? Insurance could be a reason. Cost could be another. The fact that 98 to 100% of the rangers on most car lots (at least in the Dallas,TX area) are 4x2.

I am so happy I upgraded to a 4x4. I use it all the time. Even tho I went from a perfectly running ranger to one with all sorts of funny noises. Least it has better options and the 4x4 works consistantly (knock on wood).

i know the arguments about not getting a 4x4 vehicle but it jsut doenst make sense to me. more money, bah. i see so many people who drop money into a 2wd just to make it go where a 4x4 goes. in the end it would be cheaper to just buy a 4x4 to start, plus 4x4 has a higher resale by far.

That's so not the case up this way. I'd say 30-40% of the Rangers I see around here (and there are A LOT) are 4x4s. Dealers sell them like water in the desert. Ask Matt ('Trail Boss') about the sea of Rangers at the Ford shop in Portsmouth. My stealer in Manchester is about the same.

Personally, I delt w/ a 4x2 for 4 years. I was like a lot of you, a poor college student just looking for basic transportation. I had always wanted a pickup and when I saw the ads for brand new Ranger XL's at my local dealer I made it happen. I then spent the next 4.5 years getting stuck on wet grass! The first winter wasn't so bad, as I had lots of good tread, but the next one was pretty rough. The last winter before I traded we had record snowfalls. I don't have enough fingers to tell you how many times I got stuck.. and I park in a covered garage too! .. Finally I realized I had the money. So I went to the local lot and pulled the trigger. 4x4 simply rules in the snow. No two ways about it..
