Melting gasket...

A few weeks ago I replaced my tranny filter and gasket due to a minor leak in the gasket. Since then the gasket has been replaced 3 times because the gasket is literally melting. It is leaking in the front near the bell housing. The cat is right below it. It seems like the cat is getting so hot it is melting the gasket. Could this be true? What other reasons could be causing a melting gasket? Btw replaced twice with a cork gasket and once with a neoprene gasket. So far the neoprene gasket is holding up

Is the heat shield still in place on the top of the cat ?
Did you notice a drop in fuel mileage or increased oil consumption shortly before the gasket started leaking ? My thought is the engine may be running too rich and causing the cat to overheat.

I think there is only one heat sheild. Correct me if im wrong but the only heat sheild I have is on the pass. side cat. And no fuel milage drop or increased oil consumption.

Get a new gasket, and put some High temp RTV silicone on the tranny before appyling the gasket. Also put some RTV on the pan side and press it up to the trans. Any excess that may be pushed into the trans will eventually get disenegrated leaving no damage to the trans at all.
