A/C Dryer Replacement

I discovered a pin hole leak in my A/C dryer last year. This year it is much larger and it evacuated everything.
My question is how hard is it to replace this myself and recharge it? I've recharged the system before and replaced the pressure switch but never changed anything out on it. The part is only $20 and a shop wants close to $300 to evacuate, change the dryer and recharge. It doesn't seem that difficult.

Also could the climate control assembly in the dash cause the a/c not to work if it is bad. My wifes fan only works in low and high and now no a/c. I was wondering if I should replace the whole assembly. I thought it might be low on freon but it won't take a charge and the clutch won't kick on.

Thanks

Well your system really should have a vacuum (evacuate) pulled on it after replacing the desiccant. If it were me, I'd replace the desiccant, get a vacuum pulled on it and then recharge it myself. You will also need to have oil added to it, I'm not sure if the shop would do that but not recharge it or not. Maybe you could find a mom and pop shop to pull a vacuum on it and inject oil then you recharge it.
