cherrybomb

i always wanted to get that older rougher sound out of my trucks so someone told me the easiest and cheapest way would be to through in a cherry bomb glass pack so i went and found one at canadian tire for about $20 now i need to install it so i went to my local custom shop and when i told the guy i want you to put this on he gave me a warning that it would chew away at my gas mileage, and that if i wanted to put one on i should also get a magnaflow system or something like that is this true or is it just there way of trying to get me to spend more money. if it does eat more gas are we talking a drastic amount or reasonable for the outcome.

his reasoning behind it was it would change how the muffler performs i don't quite remember what the exact name for it is so forgive my stupidity but he said it would drastically change the back pressure so it would take more gas. please correct me if wrong I'm here to learn. I'm also adding this in now is there a particular area i should tell him to install it or should i just let him have at it.

He's just trying to get more of your hard earned money. All exhaust shops do that on instinct no matter who it is. You see being an exhaust dealer they get a huge discount on all exhaust systems that they carry and mark them up, way up. I had one guy tell me that if he purchases 50 Flowmaster American Thunder 40 series mufflers he doesn't pay but about $25.00 bucks a piece for them and they turn around and sell it to you for about $100.00 bucks plus whatever they charge to install it. Basicly your Camshaft, Valves, exhaust manifolds, and what type/size of engine is what determines your exhaust sound. If you're running a V8 Cherrybombs sound really good but not so much on a smaller engine like a V6 or a 4 cylinder. Basicly after adding a K&N direct O.E.M replacement air filter, changing from 5W20 to 10W30 motor oil, and going with a little bit more free flowing exhaust system I was only able to gain a measly 4 mpg's which is just barely enough to notice. If you really want to save fuel Drive within the city instead of interstate, keep your tires properly inflated, change your oil on a regular basis and do EXTREME WEIGHT REDUCTION. You have to keep in mind that your Ranger weighs in at 4,500 plus pounds and a small V6 or 4 cylinder is pushing it where you need to go. That's why you here of guys in here talk about doing V8 swaps and other mods. Some of those V8's get way better mpgs than a V6 or a 4 banger ever could.

ya its not so much the gas mileage i'm after i can live with it till i buy my bigger truck I'm just after sound i i know a cherrybomb would be a good starting point till i can afford a magnaflow or flowmaster. so what else could i do on the cheap side to make it sound better i've seen a few around town with dual straight pipe out the back does this add anything.

I agree that the exhaust shop is feeding you some lies. The cherry bomb muffler will have less back pressure than your stock muffler, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Cherry bombs are a cheap exhaust but they can carry a pretty decent tone to them, although its not for everyone. If you already bought the muffler insist the shop just install the muffler. That shouldn't cost much and you can see how you like it.
