To keep the Ranger or not to keep it...?
 

I'm faced with a hard choice..

I've finally fully paid my parents for my 2001 Ranger, and I'm getting an itch for something new...something fun..

Here are my options that I'm thinking of:

1. Keep the Ranger, do numerous mods, etc etc.
orrrr
2. Sell the Ranger, use the 6k+ in cash to buy a decent condition Ford Bronco and fix it up to my liking.

I want your guy's opinions, especially those with experience with a Bronco. It seems like it would be a fun summer/winter car to get me through 2 more years of high school. I know it's not a great car but before I go to college I'm going to sell my current car anyways to upgrade to something more reliable.

I love the Ranger but I really don't have a ton of use for a truck. I go hunting and I do like to do some little projects and whatnot, but not really enough to justify a truck.

Hummm... I think I would have to say go with a '96ish Bronco and lift it on some 35's. I love those.

That's kind of what I was thinking.. After looking at a lot of sexy Broncos it really is tempting.

Plus there seem to be quite a few decent Broncos close to me for sale..

I say keep the Ranger. It's reliable (I assume) and with you being in high school I doubt you have a lot of expendable income to worry about fixing and modifying an old vehicle.

i would have to agree keep the reliable vehicle it sucks working on your truck every weekend just to keep it on the road trust me i would know

I don't know. It is a toss up. Maybe sell it if you can find a nice '96. I wouldn't sell it if your going to get something that needs money put in it right away.

Are Broncos really that unreliable?

Because I might be able to get a '96 one with 80,000 miles on it..and that's 40,000 miles younger than my own Ranger

any older vehicle will have problems. you might fix one, but another usually pops up.

He is right, being in high school and having to spend your weekends and free time after school to fix something on your vehicle sucks. I had several times that my truck was down just because of something easy and simple, yet i had to wait just for a part to come in.

If the ranger is reliable than keep and and maby do a couple small mods to it. Save the 6k for college or use it on the car you buy for college.

If your ranger is paid for then why not just save awhile and buy yourself a bronco....win,win

Bronco's are pretty realiable, thats why they sold the amount the did.

If you get a Bronco and slap 35's on it expect to get about 8 miles per gallon. My best friend has an 96 EB with the 5.8 and he has 33's and gets like 9-10mpg.

Keep the ranger when i was still in school i had a couple friends make that mistake and when there project/dailey was messed up i had to drive them around.

k.blakeley: you have a good point. I've got a few thousand in the bank I might just save up a little bit more, drop around 2-3k on a not great Bronco, and then make it my project to get it into shape.

Yeah I'd put 33"s on probably, and wasn't expecting great gas mileage. The Bronco would be for either just off-roading or possibly some summer around town driving.

if the price is decent go for it

broncos are VERY reliable, my dad bought a 91 new and sold it at 235k and the only big expense he ever had was the brake drums didnt squeal when they were going out so that was $700 ... TWICE .... but otherwise they are great trucks.

The a04d transmissions also tend go out after 200k or so

they are very heavy on gas though, but consistent. My dads was a 351 with a04d trans and it got 11 mpg. Towing, not towing, highway, city, 4wd, 2wd, 11 mpg lol

a 96 with 80,000 miles?! That makes the decision sooo much harder. I guess the only thing that would stop me from getting the Bronco is the gas mileage.

And 11mpg isn't even much worse than the 14mpg i'm getting right now with my 4.0L Ranger..

keep the ranger. put some $$$$ into some mods, like lift and tires. It'll be good to have your truck paid for and not worry about it. Just keep it for a while and possibly save up some money over the next couple of monthes, then you can buy a bronco and still keep your ranger.

Thank god gas is fairly cheap

Gas won't stay like it is forever, it's already on it's way back up.
