Killed a cat (gutted converter) *pics

A long time ago, when I first joined, I was pondering gutting my rear most cat...

Well after mush discussion I was informed that the ranger came with high flow cat converters, well I bought it and didnt touch the exhaust but months later I took another look at the box and took a look on the inside and if thats high flow then id hate to see restrictive. It probably accomplishes its environmental task just fine but logically it looks beyond restrictive.

So out came the tools.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING REMOVE O2 SENSOR. be safe and smarta

The "mesh" inside it about 8-9" deep (guesstimating)
and actually very thick

tried a screw driver and hammer...not easy

long crow bar and hammer...too heavy

metal piper and hammer..just right (practically cuts circles out of the mesh and you can remove and dump it into piles)

then take a vacuum and ram it on up in there and suck away (tehe)

last but not least, turn truck on and allow to idle for a minute as you re vacuum with the truck on, then remove vacuum and rev it just a little x< 3000

That easy

So what do you get out of doing this other than easier flow if the sound isn't any different?

I did it for a few reasons

I wanted to see if it sounded different, if it did awesome, if it didnt..awesome

then I wanted to mod, have the itch bad

then I wanted to see what was in a ranger cat, how they were built and the guts of it so I went to work

I did the same thing a long time ago. I was told 4.0 OHV's "last cat" is actually a resonator...my friend removed his and it is very powerful sounding. I noticed very minimal added sound and very minimal(if non-existent) power gains. Then again, I've got 4 freaking cats under my non-California truck. lol.

I used a 1/2"x18" breaker bar, but mostly used an 18" prybar and mallet. I got all that honey comb out...every little bit of it.

I wish but I dont have a welder or have the cash to pay a bud so muscles and time are the way to go. and with the 3.0 I wanted to keep a little back pressure to retain what puny torque numbers i own

Congradulations. You just violated a federal law and openly admitted to it online WITH photos to prove your stupidity. Not ONLY could you be fined up to $5,000, you actually LOST hp and gas mileage.

Way to go, moron.

way to be rude, smartass, there is multiple cats on a truck and I am in a state that does not exhaust test. 1 cat was removed, not all. How about you be less of a dick, just move on, your opinion is your own...but its wrong (:

If you follow automotive laws you must have one ugly truck. Breaking the law allows a better looking vehicle. Also the Main cat on the 4.0 is un monitored so why the hell is it there doing nothing. My truck isn't a cali emissions truck.

hahahaha this is funny. the xj forum I'm on, talking about gutted cats or removing them, is a big no no. although I run catless on both jeeps I've owned, one had a clogged cat, the other didn't come with one on it when I bought it. gutting or removing the cat on a ranger isn't a huge deal (unless you live in california), especially if it has multiple.

Just thought I would say one last thing, straight piped vehicles actually make more horses but make significantly less torque. and back pressure is a major factor contributing to negative mileage among other things. so running fully straight piped from headers back would make me the most mpg and the most hp on an otherwise stock vehicle. the gains would be so negligible BUT thought id 1up you again

I'm gonna argue with you on this. The back pressure spec on a 4.0 Ranger is 0psi. When i was running straight pipe I tested this and has 0psi so there was no loss in back pressure. Also you do loose torque and gain HP but loose MPG. The MPG loss is due to the loss in low end torque..more throttle to get the truck moving.
