Lesson in paying attention while offroad... must read!

I have a true story from this past weekend in Pismo that should be used as a lesson to all and can be applied no matter where the wheeling/riding is taking place.

It was a lovely Saturday afternoon in Pismo Beach CA when we set out on a ride. Our group included approx 7 quads and 7 vehicles, good size group for Pismo. One of the vehicles with us was a two wheel drive Dodge Ram, who was doing very well for a one tire fire. It was however un avoidable that he would get stuck. When he did he got really stuck. He was pulled up to the side of the bowl to give it a second go to get out, but couldnt do it and got stuck at the bottom of a very soft bowl. So we decide the best way to recover him is with a winch, of which there were plenty. Skip ahead 10 minutes and the two trucks are hooked together and the winching begins with out whole group watching around the edges or from the bowl its self along with all the lookie loos gathering to watch a winching. Now what would you think was going on here? These three genuises ride up on their quads and circle around and stop to look. They had pretty trick bikes and wanted to show off. They start to leave and what path do they choose to take? Thats right the frist guy decides to cut right between the stuck truck and the recovery vehicle, right after they stoped to see what was going on. I think you can figure what happened next. He was lucky he wasnt going any faster, but he still hit hard enough to move the trucks. Us by standers clapped and the guys winching high fived, probably not the best thing to do, but quite funny. The dumbass's buddy started to say something but quickly shut up when it hit him how stupid his buddy was. The guy was ok, nothing more than a bruised ego and they went on their way and we finished winching. Moral off the story, no mater where you are or what you are doing, never ride, drive, or walk between two vehicles in the process of recovery. I will give him the benifit of a doubt and say the cabel is hard to see, but when you stop and look, and you are looking at a stuck truck and one hooked up to it, come on. So ALLWAYS watch where you are going, this could have been a LOT worse.

Here is a pic taken a second before he hit the cable, they guy in the yellow shirt hit it. If the pic was taken a second later, he would have been on the ground.

(read the story, dont just look at the pic :headache: )

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!! !

idiot!!!!!!

u'd think that since he sees a huge group of people standing watching somthing, a guy out of his truck holding a device with the door open, and someone tryin to help his truck get out of a rut, that would trigger something in his brain to ponder for a second before going ahead.....what an idiot.....

at least he learned his lesson...hopefully....omg, that made my day.....

Bigwill41 01-25-2005 10:05 AM

Yea it would have been really bad if he had gotten hurt. What makes it really funny is the fact that he sat there, looked at the trucks, then ran through the cable... some people :blackeye:

during a recovery in deep snow this weekend my friend was between my truck and the stuck Pathfinder
I had 30 feet of strap attached to my receiver looped to another strap connected in a V to the tie down points in the back of the Nissan
my buddy was holding the strap while I crept forward to tighten up
we were on a steep incline in over 2 feet of drifted snow
Nissan was falling off the side of the incline and I was almost perpendicular to it to stop it from sliding over the edge
just as my friend signaled me to stop the Nissan started over the edge and the line quickly went tight
I was watching him in my rear view when the strap caught him in the thighs
he buckled over and then was shot as if from a cannon out of my sight line in the mirror
He was not hurt, and landed in a snow bank
I was shaking and very scared (mainly of his fire cracker wife) that he had been hurt
It was like a cartoon the way the strap threw him down the hill - one minute he was holding the strap the next he flew out of sight

this is a fun, but dangerous hobby
stay away from straps, chains, cables
use gloves and try never to stand between the vehicles

its always funny until someone gets hurt

then its freaking hilarious!

Mudhippy 01-25-2005 08:29 PM

wow,

idiot............................yes

FireRanger 01-25-2005 09:13 PM

No one should ever be standing anywhere near a recovery cable/chain/strap. One of those things snaps under tension, someone is losing a limb at the very least.

TippnOver 01-25-2005 09:19 PM

they actually did a post on this a while back at either g-e or rps....some guy was off roading a got stuck and they had to winch him out...they stuck the wich hook on his tow hooks and began as normal....well, something happened, the tow hook must not have been secure or something, but it seperated from the truck and went flying, and he was standing nearby and it clocked him in the head...dead on the spot...its some serious stuff....

yellerEDGEchick 01-25-2005 09:36 PM

wow....thats crazy...that guy was very stupid...but hey...some people arent thinking before they do things...

FireRanger 01-26-2005 06:29 AM

Tow hooks, hooks on the end of cables, etc will all become missiles if they break loose under load. That adds insult to injury since the cable will also whip around and slice you legs off.
