The Little Black Box behind the dash

When I was out searching the yards for a Lvl II style radio bezel I came across several 2wd's that had a little black box behind the radio panel. Its in the exact size, shape, and location of the 4x4 control module but it was on 2wd trucks. What the heck does this thing do? I'm thinking aboutt trying to nab one and hollow it out. Then run a set of jumper wires inside of it so my Manual T-case lights will work and it'll be a clean installation. At least a lot cleaner than just two jumper wires jammed in the 4wd plugs and electrical taped in place.

Yeah its on the left side. Bolted to the dash right next to where the A/C vents are. Where does the Gem go on 4wd trucks then?

The GEM for the 4wd should be in there as well. In 2004 Ford switched from a GEM to a SJB (Smart Junction Box) in the passanger side kick panel which is why you don't have one.

Sorry you completely lost me there. So since my truck is an 04 the thing behind the dash is the 4x4 control module and then there is an SJB in the pass. side kick panel as well, is that correct? If not what all exactly does the black box in the dash control? I thought I only saw two plugs going into the bottom of it and they're both unplugged right now because of the manual T-case swap.
