possible connection between flat tire and engine break-down?

Hello,

I have a 1994 Ranger B3000 that just broke down, and I am looking for some advice. Here's what happened:

I heard a popping sound as I was driving- 3rd gear, about 40 mph- and immediately smelled a burning odor. I pulled over to check it out, and there were no apparent problems other than the initial pop and smell. I decided to continue the mile drive home.

While driving, a rattling sound quickly made itself clear. It would happen when accelerating in first or second gear, almost like something was loose in the exhaust system (but didn't smell exhaust). It got progressively worse, eventually beginning to lurch when accelerating in first. Then I came to a stop light and it rattled again and the engine died.

I tried to start it once, it would chug-chug chug but not start. A little smoke came from under the hood. No fluids leaking. Then, I noticed a completely flat right rear tire. I guess that was the initial popping sounds, followed by the rubber burning smell of the tire/tube.

I can't think of a connection between a flat tire and engine break down, maybe it is just a coincidence. I did drive it through some mountains last weekend, so that might have caused some undue stress.

If anyone has some advice for where to start, I would really appreciate it. I am in a pretty tight spot. Thank you!

I can't think of anything that could have happened at the back with the tire that would have anything to do with smoke under the hood. Was the coolant temp hot or anything?

no, all the gauges read normal.

Also, there was rust-colored residue splattered all over the inside of the engine. It seems to be radiator coolant because that was low in the reservoir.

everyone I have talked to says that there is likely no connection between the flat and the engine problems. Today I sprayed the manifold with starting fluid and it started. I think I've done all I can do, tomorrow I take it to a shop for a diagnostic.

Sounds like you might have poped a head gasket.
