Hi all.

02 XLT/FX4 5-speed with 88K here.

So I finally got my clutch install finished. Everything is put together, so I start her up, shift to reverse and I hear a clicking sound.

I thought, whatever... too tired to worry about it right now.

Well, as I'm going through the gears, I hear a loud whirring sound. It's intermittent, and only happens when I'm in gear. Clutch pedal in or not, it still whirrs. This concerns me and I have no idea what it could be.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that it DOES drive normal in all 5 speeds and reverse. Clutch doesn't slip but it seems hard to shift into gear sometimes.

Could this be a bad clutch slave cylinder (or simply not bled enough)?

well the shifting issue bleed the system more...idk on the sound though

 

Yeah that slave cylinder seemed to be prebled. It didn't take much at all to bleed it.

I'm going to put her up on jackstands today and see if I can pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

I really hope NOT to have to tear the tranny out again.

 

Well, bled the slave cylinder again and it's still making that whirring noise. Further investigation seems to point toward something loose between the bell housing and the block.

I'll be pulling it apart probably weekend after next and see what went wrong.

Don't even think horrid thoughts like that. That clutch is brand spanking new and cost me $400. I bought a Centerforce clutch so I wouldn't ever have clutch problems again.

Unless you got really rough trying to reinstall the tranny, such as part way in and letting the weight hang on the fingers, I doubt that you bent a finger.
When bolting the pressure plate to the flywheel, did you snug all the bolts down? That's the only "loose thing" possibility in that area that comes to mind.

 

The tranny was on a jack the whole time. Slide right out and slid right in.

As for the bolts on the pressure plate, I only tightened them to the point where the flywheel would spin if I torqued them any further.

No matter. It's coming back apart weekend after next and I'm doing it right this time. That means actually taking the exhaust off so I can pull the tranny ALL THE WAY OFF, instead of nudging here and there for an extra 1/32nd of an inch to fit a socket in there.

Lastly, I'm going to replace all of the seals on the tranny and tear apart the 4wd shifter assy, have it sandblasted and painted, then put the whole mess back together.

LOL all this before the snow hits NEPA.
