mods and mpg issues
when i first got my ranger i was getting about 15mpg, so i decide to buy some stuff for it to increase fuel efficiency. the first thing i got was a k&n intake, that got me to 16.5 mpg, then i got a throttle body spacer(don't hurt me i didnt research it, it claimed better efficiency) that got me to 17.2 for a tank of gas, then it dropped back down to 15.9, so i go and get a nice exaust system and see no real change for a tank of gas. i recently seafoamed the intake and ran a can through my gas tank, got 15.3 mpg with seafoam in my gas, is it normal to get bad efficiency with it in the gas, then on next fill i notice better? what's going wrong? air filter already clogged after 4500 miles? tb spacer make it worse? any ideas? when i got 17.2 i was happy, then i'm on this dropping trend thats leaving me puzzled after $750 in parts
I just got a screamin demon coil pack and a bama tuner installed today with 87mpg tune, i'll see what change i get here for this fill up.

I'm sorry to hear you have lost $750!!! You have experienced what I have been trying to warn youngsters about on this forum, I don't want to see them throw their money away on useless performance mods!
Too bad everybody can't be as honest as you have been!
As far as suggestions for better MPG, driving habits will affect MPG more than any perforrnace mod. Just do the obvious, keep a check on tire pressures, and keep you engine in shape (Motorcraft spark plugs, plug wires, OEM paper air cleaner, fuel filter, PCV valve).

yeah man, only thing i bout was the K&N and i loved it... it had a Magnaflow on there when i bought it (Magnaflow Performance SSE)
when i bought it i got 18 (i have a 3.0), with the K&N i got near 20 (no ****)
throttle body spacers dont do much for rangers simply cuz they are more "enhancing" to older carbureted vehicles... if you put one on a 68 Camaro with a carbureted 396, sure you'll get performance
i plan on doing pulleys and a tuner and thats it... as long as i clean my filters (air, fuel, radiator), change my oil, and keep good fluids (tanny, radiator), that engine is gonna run how its supposed to

i have a friend that's a mechanic at a ford dealership here and he told me the oil from k&n filters can get on the mafs and screw with it, i've been wondering if that has something to do with it. the intake made a drastic change, then dropped off. that's just a hunch.
i've made sure my driving habits are normal, no excessive fast acceleration, staying around 60mph on highway, no sitting around idling for long. curious to see how the tuner affects things.
