tirechain.com chain problems

Hey all,

I bought some v bar reinforced cam style tire chains from tire chain. com, and have really benefited from the traction they provide in the white stuff. I was actually able to pull through a section of road that had 18 inches of snow with ice under it in my 2wd edge after a buddy with a 4x4 ranger got stuck. However, after chaining up 5 or 6 times, and only driving about 20 miles, one chain is fine, but on the other, the cross chain links are worn 1/2 way through. I don't think that this is normal considering that I keep the chains tight and also use a rubber tensioner. Tirechain.com has been less than helpful, and said that the chain is probably not under warranty. Is it possible that I just have a defective chain, and should get another pair, or is tirechain.com's products known for poor quality? What say you?

I would just buy another set that way if you have one that goes bad or breaks, you will still have the extra one.

do you have an open rear or limited slip? it could be maybe if you have an open rear that that one side is getting less traction so it is the one slipping all the time causing more wear on the chains.

Its open, but the only time I had significant wheelspin was when I was in 18 inches of snow, and the chains were NO WHERE close to the pavement in that situation.

I would suggest installing LS for use with chains. Otherwise you will get the one wheel spins.

I would love to have an ls, but from what I hear it costs 1 grand or more to install. I also noticed on those chains that the wear is on the underside of the chain, on the part of the chain that touches the tire. Not sure how that could happen. Any ideas?

I'd suspect low quality chain material. I'm no expert on chains, but I do occasionally have to run them on certain roads on my semi. 20 miles on a half-worn set of chains is ridiculous on a light pickup, even if used at higher speeds on rough terrain.

My $0.02.

Just a guess...they slipped you a used chain and you didn't notice the wear till later. Specially if you were hanging your iron in a storm or at night.
