Almost sounds like one of the bearings is on its way out.

Dunno about how long it will last, But Its not something I would dillydally around with either. Was quoted $150 for a new one/ However I would opt to have it rebuilt if it were me

I'm gonna have to agree. I thought my alt was bad too until it started really whining. Then I checked my PS reservoir. Full of metal shavings.

When its the bearing on the alternator, its pretty obvious as to where its coming from when it's idling an your lookin at the thing.

Mine is doing the same thing. I'm goona drop mine off Monday morning. A local shop quoted me $40 to replace the bearings or $80 to rebuild the entire thing. Drop it off at 8am an it'll be done by noon.
