Mythbusters

I can't remember where I heard it....but someone here was arguing about weather the tailgate is better (more mpg, less drag) up or down.

Well, this might be a repost but I just saw the episode, I just wanted to see everyones thoughts.

They came to the conclusion that the tailgate is better up (which has been proven by many other people)

Just thought I would share...

How does it creat more drag on the assend of the truck? as I remember the correct thing is that it creates an air bubble in the bed of the truck that allows air to rush over, aerodynamics.

when the tailgate is down the bubble isnt formed and all the air rushes down onto the tailgate causing mroe downward force on it.
with the tailgate UP it creates that air bubble ... that is why it is better to have it up ...

Did they try it with a tonneau cover or cap to see the difference?

I remember reading in Car and Driver or something that having a tonneau cover may be better than the ordeal with the tailgate being up or down, but they weren't sure because they didn't test it either.

I think I must agree and will give it a go. I miss my toneau cover though, not just for the save on gas for the looks and ability to hide stuff.

hmm..I think he means that he make a decision to purchase based on the information from the show.

Like if they say a tonneau cover was great for gas mileage, he would buy one. If they say its terrible for gas mileage and leaving the tailgate down is better...he wouldn't buy one and leave his tailgate down.

I spent my many a college years interpreting drunk talk j/k :)

A drunk comes up out of the subway and another drunk asks him, "Where you been?"

The first drunk says, "I was down in some guys basement and boy you should see HIS train set..."

******************

A drunk walks up to a parking meter and puts in a quarter and it goes to 60 minutes and he says, "Whoa, I lost 100 pounds..."

with your tailgate up, what if you have objects in your bed, say your spare tire, or in my case a spare tire, and the tool box that sits 4 inches above the bed rail. Do you think that has an effect on the "air bubble"?

An effect, probably. A detrimental effect that spoils the aerodynamics completely, probably not. Just a guess though.

Best way to end a "tail gate up or down" question is with a tonneau cover.....LOL Fixes everything.
