My Ranger is Increasing in Value acording to KBB.....

Yep, you read it right. but theres a catch, and its kind of wierd.

Since buying the ranger, I have been all over the new and used ranger market like flies on dog poop. I got pics of what the trucks are selling for, what they are options, years, miles.... so I know my market for my truck on the lots... so here it is, here are my numbers.

as of early 2005, the 03 with around 20K miles, was stickered betyween 14-16K

as of early 2005, the 04 with about 20K miles was stickered, at around 16-18K.

now, since I dont own an 03, and I own an 04, I have noticed some discrepencies on KBB.com. as many of you know, I have had some serious repeating issues with my truck. so, I kept tabs on my trucks value. in 05, starting from the begining, of the year to the end of the year, my trucks trade in started at 15K, retail was $17K

by the end of the year, trade in was hovering in the mid to low 14's.. and retail was around 17K.

THIS YEAR: trade in is down to around 13.3K Retail, its gone UP to 19K. now this has also been confirmed on the lots. at first I thought it was a kbb glitch, till i started checking the lots, and found out. thats how their being stickered. now I under stand, that sticker prices are just a basic starting point, so, knock off say? $2,000 from those retail prices, and you STILL have in INCREASE in value. however, trade in value keeps dropping..... what are your thoughts?

It's probably Bush's fault because he wants oil from the Middle East.

HarryTasker 02-24-2006 12:40 AM

ignore what kbb has to say they are give prices that favor banks and car dealerships.

A more accurate guide is nadaguides.com and edmunds.com

NADA? Hahaha! National Automotive Dealers Administration, lol.

I think edmunds is the only one not really affected by dealers.

And Kyle, you're a dirty hippie, that was really uhh..ignorant statement haha. I'd blame it on company greed compared to Bush. Bush messes up other ****.

Nadaguides is the only pricing guide that has pricing for L2's

MonsterGuy 02-24-2006 04:40 AM

Insurence companys go by NADA.com i know 2 of my trucks they had me look it up there for a total price when my truck got totaled.

KBB says my 03 is worth less then 8grand LOL!

Stump 02-24-2006 07:10 AM

I just bought my '01 Edge on Jan 31st. The same day my wife had a 5axle dump truck pull out in front of her and total her '99 EB Expedititon(only broke her hand). Also agreed that the insurance co's use NADA for totaled cars.

Well in my search of replacements I have noticed that the used car market in general has held it's value(only for the dealers). I think it's because all of the lower prices on new cars everyone is trading in so now the Dealers have all the good used cars also. So they can give you a lower new car price so the ding you on the trade in and then sell your trade in for retail and maker a killing.

KBB, Edmunds, NADA - dealer sticker prices
on the open market items are worth as much as you can get someone to pay
those are just guides and the figures that insurance companies work with
those reports rely on market responses to their inquiry after a sale and most of that information comes from the dealers

if you are talking about a lease on your truck and the buy out amount - firstly it is listed on the original documents
sometimes the dealer will haggle - mainly if there is a glut of available vehicles
if you have something they want because they can get a higher price for it you are going to have to pay the full buy out amount
if they are dumping them - then you can get the buy out lowered because there are too many on dealer lots already
those reporting agencies may or not be accurate but they act as the basis for loan and insurance purposes

kbb sucks and is completely and uterrly inaccurate.

My friend had an MR2 that was in perfect shape (1993) which is a rare car already.

They are selling for 6-7$ EASY for one in good condition, and the kbb value for it in EXCELLENT condition was 2800!!!

KBB does not calculate the rarity of the car and the actual going-market value. Its just based on the companies decrease in market value as the car ages.

Go get a value for a truck in excellent condition with 120,000 miles and then do the same truck with 10,000 miles, the value will increase maybe 200 bucks.

countyftball21 02-24-2006 12:14 PM

according to KBB and NADA, my truck is worth almost 15000 on a trade in. i think it is extremely high.

FMD 02-24-2006 12:45 PM

this I think has something to do with the increase in prices.... how many of you bought your vehicals new, and when comparing what your sticker price was for your truck new, compared to an 06, of similar options, how much of a difference? its about $3200 give or take a couple hundred. this way it keeps the used ranger market strong, yet for some odd reason, the trade in market is low. I have shown this in dealer lots, looking at trucks almost identical to mine, their actually the same only i have the pwr group, stickered, with 26K miles or so, for $18,000.... yet trade in value is $13,000 thats a $5,000 difference,

I geuss, what im asking is how do u like, get more for your trade when theres such a large gap between the trade in, and retail?

FMD 02-24-2006 12:48 PM

I am also watching 03's as well because their a year older, their retail on the lots are hovering around 16 for the "cheap ones" and 17 or so for the fx4's..... this again, now, dD has an 03 i think, and he said his is $8K on trade in, now thats, a HUGE difference...... what gives??

HarryTasker 02-24-2006 01:31 PM

Gearhead bought his '03 L2 for around 15k. So i would put my private party at about 14 and trade about 12.

hpyford 02-24-2006 01:50 PM

hah. i don't mean to be an ass. but my father has beena new car dealer for 30 + years. ive heard talk every night and am currently working in a dealership. but your truck isn't going to go up. the average deal profit on a used truck is around 1600 dollars. keep that in mind when you see the sticker prices on a used truck

NHBubba_Revisited 02-24-2006 02:11 PM

FWIW: I just heard a guy in Western Mass that traded his '02 FX4 (basically identical to my LII) @ ~25k miles. He got $13k for it.. and felt lucky to do so.

hpyford 02-24-2006 03:20 PM

also keep in mind all the dumba**es that work in a dealership. i have known some dealers to give thousands over a vehicles true worth.you can't count on some people's ignorance to be there every time when you go to trade in a vehicle

i_love_paintbal 02-24-2006 04:18 PM

wow NADA.com said my truck was worth 2k more than kelly that cant be right

Nate97Ranger 02-24-2006 05:40 PM

My XLT with 46k miles is getin 7-8k.

I dout I could get that, interior is still like new, If I just buff the outside maybe.

It's a 97 too

If you've got a higher-end or special trim model like a Tremor or LII, I would expect the opposite. Most FORD dealers I've met don't know the difference between a 4x4 Edge and a fully-loaded LII. I would be shocked if a non-Ford dealer could tell the difference (or even cared to do so).

My experience is that car dealers deal in quantity. They really don't care much more than the vehicle's VIN number, mileage and condition. After that it's just another pile of metal, just like the rest.
