Need advice on buying a ranger

Hi, I want to get a 4x4 truck that gets decent gas mileage, so I've been looking at Rangers.

I found a 92 4x4 supercab with 105k for $1375 in my neighborhood. It is a 5 speed with a 4.0l. The guy says he gets about 20 mpg. Does that sound right? The body is a little rough (dings) but not too bad. He says basically everything works, the only mechanical work it might need soon is a ball joint or tie rod end as there is some play in the front end.

What do you guys think? Is this a good deal? Also, what should I look out for when I go to look at the truck?

Thanks

/Brian

Mine is a 3.0 2wd Edge, I wish I had 4.0 4x4 extended cab. if that helps any.

up in AK any 4x4 vehicle that runs and moves is worth a 1000 immediatelly.

Look for rust. It sounds like a good deal, but Has it been in any accidents and check for rust. 20mpg sounds a little hight to me. does he have a chip in it or is that highway milage?

its a 5 speed stick? then it should be getting decent mileage

Yeah definatly check for rust, dont be afraid to get under that thing and see what she is working with.

Yeah, I thought it sounded like a good deal. I'm going to go check it out tomorrow. What is the best way to test out the 4wd?

Thanks

Being a 92, it's the old body style, so they do rust alot. Check the wheel openings, tailgate, and the supercab extension closely. To test the 4x4 in summer, you'll have to find a gravel road or parking lot, turn it on, and you'll feel it pulling.

I doubt the 20 MPG is right. I had a 2WD 88 Ext cab with a 2.9 and a 5spd, that only hda 60K miles and I barely pushed above 17 MPG I got 18 once.

I dont know, a 5-speed on the Hwy., I could see 18-20 mpg

Ok, I took a look at the truck today and now I need a bit more advice. Some bad things I noticed about the truck (some I knew about beforehand, some I didn't):
- cracked windshield
- transfer case looks to be leaking a bit
- lots of slop in the steering
- wheelwells are rusted through
- engine doesn't seem to heat up much (doesn't get above the 'n' in normal)

However, the exhaust looks new and the tires are pretty new. The guy said he bought the truck off ebay so he wasn't sure about the 105k but said that's what the ad said when he bought it. Doesn't seem to smoke or anything, runs and drives pretty well (other than the steering slop).

He said he would take $1000 for the truck. What do you think, should I take it or not?

Thanks
