Need Help!
 

I just bought a 1991 Ranger for a buck and it has been sitting up for three years. My first goal is to drain all the fluids. I need to empty the old gas and was thinking that dropping the gas tank and draining the tank would be the best route.

Does anyone have a better idea??

I think the easiest way to the tank is to take the bed off.

I would remove the fuel filter with buckets handy. If it doesn't all gravity drain out, hit the key to Run to use the fuel pump.

I just pulled a bed from a 93 on Sunday (bad fuel pump). I'm still sore (40" breaker bar). Nothing about THAT job is "easier". I tried an impact wrench @120 psi - those bolts never even moved. Even AFTER I broke them loose with the breaker bar.

I also considered "dropping the tank". After I removed the bed, I saw why that would have been a big effort too. Long rusty bolts into clip nuts, working upside down, with dirt falling, etc. Definitely not my idea of easy.

Pull the bed off and while you have access to the frame , run new steel brake line.Much easier that way.Also check the tail light harness for any chafing.
Get one of those pumps that chuck into a drill and connect with garden hose.
Pull the pump/sending unit and toss it.Probably getting worn out anyway.
Stick a short piece of garden hose on the pump and pump into a bucket (Have a few handy,no telling how much gas is really in there)
Let the gas sit in the bucket for 10 minuites.Let any water that may have been in the tank separate out.
Install new pump/sending unit.
new fuel filter.
before adding any gas , dump in a can of drygas/injector cleaner to help remove any remaining water.
Throw in 5 gals of gas and cap off the tank inlet with something(plastic bag and rubber band?)
Re-install the bed after you're sure :
the brakes work
fuel pump works
fuel guage works
No leaks in fuel line.

And if you dont feel like re-using any of that old gas.. feel free to use the gasoline for an expensive bonfire! :-D
