this truck im really considering buying is a 4.0 v6 <not sure if its sohc or what> and i was jsut wondering what the gas milage with them are...how do they compare to the 3.0? or what can be done to get better millage exluding a new exhaust. i was going to get a cold air and probably a chip because leos truck got great milage with his chip

 

i usually got around 300 to the tank in my truck.. 320-330 on long trips.

250 when i drove like an ***... lol

this was a SOHC , dont know about the OHV

 

was this before or after the chip? because 300 is about what my moms 3.0 taurus gets

noob question... which gets better milage the sohc or ohv?

 

Winter 4.0 gets aprox 15 (all ohio mpg)
Summer 4.0 ~~ 17
Trip in summer ~~ 19-20 if kept under 70

Thats 4x4 and sohc.
From what I have seen the ohv gets the same
if driven in a similar manner.

3.0 gets about 1mpg better than 4.0 in a similarly equipped truck
The exception is with bigger tires the 3.0 loses gas mileage faster
even with a regear.

If you dont get a 4x4 add 1-3mpg

Its just a pet peeve of mine but miles per tank doesnt mean Jack ****
I wont go into the fact that there is 3 different size ranger gas tanks...
the only way to be close is to fill up 2-3 times noting total miles driven
divide by total gallons (preferably 500+ miles to make it as accurate as poss.)

Me too Neil, although not as big of a hole I suppose! I keep a log of every drop of fuel I pump. To date (~24k miles) I'm averaging about 16.5 MPG. Although that's w/ an '03 SOHC 4.0L V6, not the older OHV. Although it is w/ a 4x4..

 

i dont know what the hell im averaging right now per gallon, but normally i get about 210-220 miles per tank, and rarely ever (if ever) do i drive like an ***.

 

Like Rand said, miles per tank is pretty misleading. Not only are different trims fitted w/ different sized tanks, but also each of us has different thresholds as to how far we will go before filling up. I myself start to look for a filling station shortly after clearing the 1/4 tank mark. I very rarely see the 'Check Gage' indicator. As of such I rarely get better than 250 miles/tank..

 

i have that same habit because of my first car (fuel gauge would say i had gas as i sat there on the side of the road with an empty tank).

you brought to mind another thought i had.. what's the largest size gas tank available for our trucks?? im not gonna swap gas tanks out or anything, but was just curious to know if there was bigger than what i have now. i think i have a 14 gallon maybe.. it just seems small for a truck. i wish i had a larger tank... filling up once a week is annoying. i'd like to go at least a week and a half, lol.

 

I think the supercab trucks have the largest tanks, and it's about 19.5 gal.. although I rarely pump more than 15-16 (which should show how conservative I am in that respect). Although fordvehicles.com says that all '05 Rangers are equipped w/ 19.5 gal tanks..

I personally fill up once every 1.5-3 weeks, depending on how often I go see my GF or go up to the mountians. I'll probably make it nearly a month on this fillup now that the bike is out and the weather is so good for riding.

 

I too, keep a log of every drop.... my truck is basically the same as Colin's except it's an automatic and has 25,000 miles on it. My overall average is 16.8 mpg from 7/11/03 - 4/13/05.

 

I got the OHV which is what you are looking at. During this past winter I constantly got about 13 mpg with stop and go city driving. Out on the highway it would do a lil better than 18 mpg. Not sure about summer driving I haven't had it through a summer yet. Just remember compared to your moms 3.0 that gas tank is probably a 16 gallon tank my supercab 4.0 has a 19.5 gallon tank. Actually the auto has a lower overdrive which might help on the highway.(but very little).

supercab = 19.5 gal.
reg cab = 16.5(i think)
reg cab long bed = 20

Hey Jeff are you asking about the milage of a 99 4.0? If so I can tell you all you want to know, if not the others have it covered.

 

You got it right Rand. My old 98 reg cab had a 16 or 16.5 gal tank.

I'm thinking the same thing about mine. The manual says I'm supposed to have a 19.5 gallon tank, but I fill up on the red line and can only put 15+ gallons in it.

SOHC came about in 01' 98-00 as well as all before are OHV. In my 99 4.0 I get ~12mpg on the street when thats all I do and ~17 on the freeway. On long trips with lots of freeway miles I get 21+ easy. I have a 4x4 Supercab with a 19.5 gallon tank. I have put 19in it before..lol.. You'll like it, its a great engine. Anything else just ask!

 

Flaresides only get a 16.5 gallon tank.

This is because the flareside is no longer offered in Rangers.

Hope this clears some stuff up.

Also, miles per tank aren't accurate. I doubt anyone goes until the last drop of gas is out of their truck and sits there and says... "Okay, I got this many miles on that tank..." If you want to find out your mpg go fill up and take how many miles you went from your tripometer from your last dill up and divide it by the gallons you just put in. Then reset the tripometer and repeat. I love hearing stories of people saying they get like 10 mpg because they think their gas tanks is empty. To back this up, I was told by our Ford service guy that the gas gauge reads empty when there is about 2.5 - 3 gallons left. So people go to fill up and there is still gas in their tank . Oh well...

would the truck being a 2wd make the milage go up at all, and more then likely it'll have the stock tires or 30's, so its not gonna have m/ts

 

2wd will help some theoretically but you don't really see it. It has to do with the transfer case. Just like the 2wd has a greater towing capacity than the 4wd. Although the truck will pull everybit of what a 2wd will. Oh well, I'm comparing apples to oranges. And I will vouch for there being about 2.5-3 gal left when your on "E". I've driven over 30 miles on "E" before with a trailer. I was following my gf's dad and he like to push it to the last drop for fun.
