Need help w/ an Escort w/ no fire

I've got a 97 escort 2.0 spl...the bolt on the timing belt tensioner broke. replaced it set timing (both arrows up) Now there is no fire. Replaced cam & crane sensors, also the coil pac. Is it possible to be 180 out? Checked all fuses Checked wires.

where was the crank positioned when both of the arrows on the cams were up?

wait, is it split port or vct (dohc)?

It's SOHC both crank and cam point up to the indicators on the block and the head....You can turn the crank 180 and it will put the cam 180 out...I don't have a compression guage to find top-dead-center and #1 plug is too deep to reach and feel it.....

Well.... could it possibly be your valves screwed up?

Because IIRC that engine is an interference engine, meaning the pistons can and will hit the valves if your timing belt slips or breaks.

Interference engine, the pistons will hit the valves, non-interference, the pistons will not hit the valves.

At least interference/non-interference is what I've always heard them called.

^thats right. you can find tdc by puttin your thumb over the spark plug hole and turning the engine over by hand until you feel air pushing on your thumb. then stick a straw.. long, skinny extension.. or something of that sort in the spark plug hole and turnin the engine over until the straw reaches its peak.

Your right dustin..

The escort should be a non interference engine....

Take the timing covers back up, line everything up, take the #1 plug out, and stick a coat hanger in there... make sure its TDC....

Is it backfiring while cranking? not cranking at all? Clicking? Sputtering?

We just didnt one that did the same thing about a month ago, it was green...

Came in running like crap.. tensioner took a crap... ate throught the timing cover...

Teeth were missing on the belt, and the cams skipped on the belt.. so it was all out of whack...

Put a new tensioner, belts, etc on it.. started right up

Well I don't know about the 97's, but I do know that in the 98's there were two different 2.0 engines used, a double cam and a single cam, The double cam is a Non interferance engine, the single cam is an interference engine and might be damaged.

Acording to the Ford house my valve/ pistons have clearence...so they should be fine. There is no fire what so ever...no sputter, no small hit..nothing. that is what has me baffled. I've put two timing belts on in the past 250,000 miles and I've never had problem getting it timed....

So its cranking... just no fire at all... all you hear is the starter turning?...

Do you have the upper cam cover off? is everything turning like its suppose to?

did you make sure all the plugs are plugged in, and the crank sensor wires didnt get pinched?

Wish i could help more.. talked to the guys at work about it,and if you could give us more info, we could help more...

It turns over just fine, it just doesn't fire...I pulled a plug and cranked it and no spark. I have changed the cam and crank sensors, also the inginition coil pack. Went through and check connections. Ohm-ed the fuses...check EVERY single fuse. No fire. Code reader had "no codes" I am lost....

So it was just a Injector not plugged in?

Since you said no spark... and no fire or studder i thought for sure something had to be unplugged or broken...

Glad you got it fixed.. Sorry i couldnt help more
