I say get the Focus. I had an 04 SVT with the European appearance package that i sold about three months ago and I miss that car. It's fairly quick and it handles like its on rails. Very fun to drive.

Ok.
I have owned a Focus and been a member of some of the larger focus web forums and now i am here and also on one of the largest ford truck sites as well.

I love my Focus and won't part with it. Its not the best one out there but I still like it.

I would say try to keep both but you probably can't afford it.

I had a F250 and sold it due to 10mpg and $2/gal. I was begging friends to help me after that bacause I didn't realize how much I really "used" my truck. After about 6 or 8 months I picked up an older Toyota 4x4 Pickup and have always kept a truck plus the Focus.

As for the SVT Focus. It is a nice car. Well built (for what a domestice can be compared to an import). You do have to realize its considered an entry level car and not up to the standards of Subaru or VW. It can still hold its own pretty well though. With the work you said the guy did to it he's gotten it to a nice performance spot in its life. I've spoken with guys with SVTf's and thay say the programer and suspension drop brings the car to where Ford should have released it at. I also know a guy that takes a 100% stock (tires included) SVTf and whipes the floor cleen when he enters auto-cross events.

But as mentioned the SVTf gets an average of 25 mpg and requires 91+ octain. So take that info as you will.

If I was you and wanted a Focus as a DD and gas saver I would find an 03-04 ZX3 or sedan with the 2.3L motor in it (runs off 87 octain). My ex had an 03 ZX3 with 2.3L Duratec PZEV in it and we were consistantly getting over 30 mpg and I would beat the thing when I drove it. The gearing on the 5 speed is such that it will litteraly push you into the seat. I loved the acceleration in the 03. Was like night and day compared to my 01 ZX3(2.0L Zetec). The 2.3L has 145hp(highly restricted on intake and exhaust in PZEV form. 155hp non PZEV) out of the box and with some simple bolt ons you can get it close to the 170hp of the SVTf. The SVTf stock suspension will also bolt right up to any 03-04 ZX3 or sedan. Nice cheap and decent quality drop for handeling.

I did keep up with a 04 SVTf once in the 03 on the highway. Was he letting me keep up? Not sure. I also spanked a 05ish Mustang on an entrance ramp. He ate me for dinner once I hit the 110 speed limiter in 4th with plenty of rpm left. Again did he let me???? Who knows. Was it a 6? Not sure.

All in all. You're tossed between 2 completly differant cars with 2 compleatly differant purposes.

you would have a higher safety rating in the ranger than the focus

it comes down to what you want more, the Ranger with it's hauling capabilities and good looks, or the Focus which is fast, better on gas and can seat more people.

just a little followup...

i NEVER (literally never) haul anything in my truck. it is a total street queen. I also have a programmer, and am currently running a 91octane performance tune. It helped my gas mileage by a little, but not much. I was getting low to mid 15's, and with the programmer I get low 16's.

some of the benefits of the focus (in my eyes) are the 6spd tranny, much quicker than the ranger, arguably more fun to drive, and better gas mileage.

benefits of the truck would be hauling stuff, which i dont really do, it sits up higher, which is nice in traffic and such, it's bigger than the focus, so i'm assuming that would make it safer in a collision, and the fact that it is a pretty damn sweet looking, albeit underpowered truck.

still torn :o/

Well there you go, you just weighed it out in each hand, Get the focus they can be tons of fun, A lot of styling mods, Great for a sound system,

Again I have had mine almost 5 years now and wont get rid of it, 61k miles on it now and still runs like new.

Mine is the 2.3pzev if I drive the speed limit and don't take off fast I can squeeze 400 miles to a tank and thats a hard squeeze but I have done it a few times. It is hard to not speed in one.

Also think of savings due to gas don't just think mpg or each tank full, Think Monthly and yearly savings on gas.

those focus's do look like fun... be like a nice new lego set, lol... my opinion is that if you don't haul anything, then the SVT hatch would be good, do the rear seats fold down?

Yes, seats fold flat on a hatch back, The lower half lifts up and then the backs fold down flat.

The interior in the SVT would make choose one over a regular Focus.

Go for the focus, idk man its up to you, its sounds like the focus would be fine for you, you are going to miss your truck, I miss my focus even with my ranger. I think no matter what car/truck you currently have unless its a piece of crap, you will miss it when you get a new one.
