New AC 1st start on rebuild
 

Hi All,

I am in the middle of putting my truck back together after rebuilding the engine and decided to install a new A/C system switching it from R-12 to R134a at the same time.

The compressor came pre-oiled w/.8oz of PAG46 oil; what is the easiest/best way to get the system going without damaging any of the new components? Keep in mind that I am starting a newly rebuilt engine at the same time, and would prefer not to spend to much time with the truck idling.
I do not need the A/C to be working during the engine break-in; is it better to leave that for another time? How?

My truck is a 92 2WD with the same year donor.

I would hook all the AC lines up and then add a little pressure to the system, so no air can get in, write down what pressure is so you remember

Then leave compressor wires unplugged and do the engine break in, as you see fit

After the break in check pressure to make sure there are no leaks and then refill

RonD is there any way you can explain how to pressurize the system and check that pressure. I have very little experience with a/c work.

Detaching the power to the compressor won't affect the electrical system?

You need an AC Gauge set when refilling or when checking AC systems, you can rent these

AC is not complicated but you need to know some specific info to do it correctly
You will need to replace the dryer if it has been exposed to outside air for more than a few days, they are not expensive, but only install it when you are ready to refill and pressurize the system
