Like the title says. What do these avg mpg and are they reliable

The price is a little high, I have 3 of those trucks and they are amazingly reliable. But like any vehicle if proper maintenance isnt done then it will be a pile of crap. Odds are it has 4.10 gears so dont expect more than 16mpg out of it.

If you go to look at it let me know I can tell you what to look for on them

If they have not kept up with the coolant additives pass.....big problem with cavitation. Other than that, soild truck. I have an 89 250 7.3 that I use for plowing. Did a ton of work that is already done on that like the D60 up front and some rust repair but now have a solid work truck. Watch the rust on the rad supports, general rust also.

If the owner took care of it (real maintenance not the stacks and other crap) and there is no rust then that truck may last a LONG time....though don't expect great mpg or it being economical in any way. Oil changes and fixes are not cheap on diesels.

 

Ah you are slightly mistaken. Only the IDI 7.3 had a cavitation issue. The Powerstroke motor never had that issue. But you are right on saying a Dana 60 is the only real way to go VS that TTB junk

As for filling them up. Remember they have two 20 gallon tanks so you can do the math on that.

Anymore you have to watch out for silicates in the coolant. Cat ELC coolant is the best to use and will ensure you dont clog up oil coolers

Do you really need a Diesel?

 

If it is auto and has not been rebuilt/replaced yet, be ready to.....autos are know tofrequently fail behind the 7.3

Edit:.....looks like a shifter for a manual, but can't tell from the pic...

 

That red one had a plow. I get anywhere from 16-21 mpg with mine (7.3l 5 speed 4.10's) depending on what I'm doing. That Green one looks nice. I enjoy mine, but maintenance is high on truck like these if they weren't cared for.

 

X2 on the auto. My dad's old boss replaced his 3 times.

 

i saw the red one inperson. it had the plow frame installed. the plow was never mounted. zero signs of it being mounted. nothing was even hooked up or anything. I'm wanting a diesel just cause i do but i do not need one by any means.

 

Just make sure you really think about everything else that is associated with a diesel. I've had multiple friends and family that got into diesels and immediately regretted it because they had no real use for one and didn't like paying the higher cost for maintenance and repairs.

Just something to think about!

Didn't Beard just sell his diesel because the maintenance was killing him?
If you have no real use for a diesel, your asking for more trouble than you have now. Do you like to get in your truck, turn the key and go? Forget that.
Do you like paying $0.20 more a gallon (at least thats what it is here) for gas?
Also, Your a Ford Mechanic. last i knew, they didn't give you much training on diesels. if something breaks your probably not going to be able to fix it yourself.
All of my diesel buddies don't even want to touch older powerstrokes like that, according to them, they're about as a good of a boat anchor as an engine.

Maintenance costs aren't as bad as the newer diesels

 

Go read the thread that beard had on his powerstroke. Read all the costs that are associated with it and also read that he didn't need a diesel and shouldn't have gotten one. Then think about you not needing a diesel.

If I were you I would seriously reconsider your thought on this.

 

If you like turning your own wrenches I would not let a diesel scare you off.....I would however worry if you want something that will run every time you turn teh key or want an economical vehicle. Diesels can be learned, but be prepared to have some downtime while learning...

Also I agree with what everyone else is saying. Beard towed. Do you? He thought he had a need for a diesel and was wrong. Read his thread. Oil changes are like $80+. Plus other maintenance. I remember when my uncle had one of those in a crew cab. He used it for what it was made for. He towed a trailer and saw alot of the US w/ it.

 

You don't need a diesel lol but I don't either and would like to have one
