New is a great deal right now but I think you could get a ton more Ranger for a little more money.
I always recommend used for a first self-owned vehicle though and with Rangers you could get a lot more and still spend less than that new one. I'd seriously consider used before I bought new if I were you....

yea thats wut my mom said... but i want the 4 cyl anyway. my first ranger was a '99 XLT 4x4 auto with the 3.0L. then i got the one i have now... but all i do with my 4x4 is tear it up off road. so i wanna go 4x2... and the 2.3L gets sooo much better gas mileage.

yea i probably will miss the 4.0 power, but wen i test drove the 2.3L it didnt feel underpowered at all. yes, it was less powerful than the 4.0L obviously. but the only place i could find that it didnt have sufficient power was in 5th gear at 65+mph. it would keep speed fine, but to accelerate i'd have to downshift.

I'd say buy the new truck, I have never been able to buy a brand new vehicle and I think it would be nice to take care of it from the beginning. But you have to make sure that the total cost of it is affordable. Your insurance will go up because it is a new truck. So, find out from your insurance company what your new premiums will be. $13.5 is a good price, but what is your monthly payment if you don't have someone to co-sign?

Its just more parts to maintain and fix down the line.

How are you going to feel 5 years down the road, still making payments on a 5 year old small, underpowered, regular cab uncomfortable truck with high miles?
Because if you try to sell it in two years it's only going to be worth about 5000. When you start paying on a loan, you start paying primarily on interest first, meaning you won't be paying hardly any principle. You will owe way more than it's worth.
Buy a used super cab with a decent motor with lower miles for less than that new one.
You won't care about good (if you want to call it that) gas mileage when you get tired of driving a little tuna can I think.
Or buy a cheap escort or something.

and theres no way im gonna put enough miles on it in five years for it to have "high miles". and the 2wd new truck is more comfortable than the one i have now.
