i drove an XLT Escape for a week while my truck was gettin worked on at Ford and i actually liked it. it had plenty of room in it and it had power everything, my trck has power nothing. It accelerates unexpectedly so you may wanna watch yourself. again you won't win any races but if you wanted a race car you wouldn't be lookin at a ranger or escape anyways. your kids will like it too because there are actual seats instead of those crappy jumper seats in the ranger...all in all i like the escape somewhat better than my truck but i love my truck so...

If money is tight, I would go with a used truck so that you don't take the depreciation hit on a new one. I'd go with a 2WD as well to use as little fuel as possible.
My 3.0 Sucked. It was sluggish as hell. I never had good gas mileage, i got maybe 15mpg. 3.0 more reliable? My truck was in the shop over 10 times in a year or so. It leaked oil, it pinged and knocked. It was awful. My 4.0 is quicker, better gas mileage and no strange problems. The 3.0 should be kept in the taurus and nothing else. I'd take a 4 banger over a 3.0.

Jon sorry you had so many problems with your 3.0 mine was good. It got great gas mileage and had no strange problems. But anywho...

The kids are 7 & 8 they dont ride with me all the time. In the reg cab they sat in the pass seat and in the middle (both buckled up) and I would turn the pass airbag off cuz they are so small. Yeah they would fit in the Ranger jumpseats, but is there seatbelts back there?

Hey jon comparing a 3,0 ranger and a 4.0 mustang is like comparing apples and oranges. Of course the stang will get better gas mileage its geared totally different. Plus the ranger is a truck they arent ment to get better gas. They are geared for towing. Plus if you got 15's with 265/75/16 with the little 3.0 thats good. Sometimes you end up with a bad apple doesn't mean that all of them suck. You gotta realise I went from a 96 gt mustang to my 03 edge which was a 3.0 regcab. Talk about a power difference.

I would certainly expect a Mustang to be quicker than a Ranger, lol.

It sounds like your engine was a bad apple. Oil leaks, poor gas mileage and knocking are not typical of the 3.0. I can see why you got rid of yours though, and at least you have a reason for saying "I hate the 3.0."

Yes. The jump seats come with lap belts (no shoulder belt...they are like the center belt on the bench seat). Just make sure you get a truck with jump seats. Not all Super Cab Rangers have jump seats...Ford has been building many of them with storage compartments back there instead.

Not to mention the Escape has a 3.0L 24v Duratec which produces 200hp. I love driving my dad's 2004 Taurus with it lol!

Ty, I would spend on an old Ranger 4.0L at the point it's paid for and make it a project truck.

That is correct! I've never owned one and after the problems Jon had and the problems I've read about I wouldn't want one. Yes I realize most are probably very good but I'll pass.

Well I think that you should wait and get what you really want, instead of forcing a decision on yourself. Because you might regret it in the long run. If your going to do something do it right.

Hmm $1300 less with the manual escape. I think the Escape would be better suited for what you need.

If an escape is a consideration, I would opt for a Mariner if Mercury is an option for you. I drive a 4.0 4x4 Ranger, my wife has a 3.0 Mariner. There is no comparison between the escape and mariner in regards to exterior styling.

I enjoy both vehicles. If you need to haul 3+ people pretty often, the escape/mariner has to be the common sense choice. I don't hate anyone enough to have them sit in the back area of my Ranger.

Yeah but if you get the edge you'll be my twin lol. I drove a 2.3 mani escape around when I worked at ford. It felt sluggish to me. Dont get the 2.3 in an escape its underpowered.

I know you cant compare a 3.0 ranger to a 4.0 mustang. However I have driven a 4.0 ranger on several occasions including when i test drove them and they are quick. Im sure there are a lot of good 3.0's out there. But I hear lots of people complaining about the 3.0. You dont ever hear about a 4.slow or 2.3slow. Only the 3.0. So im sure not all are bad, but from my own owning experience and hearing many 3.0 complain. I have every right to feel that way. The 3.0 sucks, it should stay in the taurus. The competition boasts over 200 horsepower on many of their trucks.

Dude, a six in a Stang = 4.slow

No semi-stock Ranger will ever be a performance vehicle...

With the pics of your truck, and a few other stories on the boards of rangers tangling with semi's and other nasties.
Its amazing the number of peeps that have walked away or had very minor injuries in Rangers.
3.0, nothin wrong with them, had more then one, none ever gave me a stitch of trouble, not a drag racer, but if you want a drag racer, buy a 69 plymouth with a 440, not a pickup.
The walk away factor with what your truck looked like would be enuff for my to buy another.
As for the escape, its a front drive car with an SUV body on it, you might as well buy a Focus

I had the 2.3 in a mustang and a ranger and they are a LOT slower then a 3.0 ranger. I also had the 3.0 with a 5spd in a reg cab and now my current truck. It's not as bad as you make it out to be. Its a good little engine and I understand you had a bad apple. Also a note on the taurus is that the 3.0 in the taurus is a totally different motor then the one in the ranger. There are times I wish I had more power or a bigger motor in my truck but thats only once in a blue moon. Hell I had my truck loaded down with some heavy furniture and it still felt powerful. Its all in all you look at it. You can't expect a 150hp 3.0 v6 in an ext cab ranger to be able to haul ***. It's not very suitable for the way the truck is outfitted. In my opinion the 4.0 should be standard in all ext cabs. However you can't always get what you want. Hell I went from my 3.8 v6 5spd stang to my truck and it had a LOT more power and was a good bit faster, but i'm still happy in my truck and have no complaints.
