So today i had some free time so i decided to get the oil changed on the old ranger.Oil change is $26 which is ok with me,i take a seat and wait.About 30 mins later the service guy comes out and tells me that my truck needs upper and lower ball joints,sway bar bushings and a major alignment,total of $940.He then tells me he has a lone car waiting outside for me and i could return it tomorrow afternoon when my truck was fixed!!!!
I looked at the guy and said are you crazy theres no way the truck needs all that work, he tells me its so bad its not safe to drive.........lol,.........i leave fords.
So driving home in my death trap(ford ranger) i stop at a small auto repair shop and ask them to take a look at the front end,the truck was lifted up in the air,front was looked at,upper and lower ball joints,wheel barings and holy mother of god the truck healed itself (should add re-sale value self healing truck)so i thank the guy and was on my way again.
I then come arcoss another auto shop, i also asked them the check the front end, same story noithing wrong, im happy but pissed at the same time,i drive home thinking my next step.
I call the ford dealer ship which is bayshore ford of pennsville nj i was able to get the PRESIDENT of the dealership,we talked and told him what was going on,the guy was stunned by what i was telling him,he took my number and said he would look into it and call me back,which was fair enough.
10 mins go bye and he calls back telling me there 100% sure the work needed tobe done .I asked him if my upper and lower ball joints were that bad why were my tyre tread perfect?, why wasnt the wheels making a noise,he didnt know, i asked why did two other auto shops say my truck was fine?, he didnt know.
He then asks me do i want fords to take another look at my truck!!!
I told him theres no way in the world i would even be back at that ford dealership,so then he offers me some sort of "compensation" to come back,if hes so sure why offer me any comp?
It was a out and out rip off that im sure of, what do u think?

find another dealership to deal with....and remember, the smaller the dealership, the better to deal with...

 

Oh yeah, someone was trying to rip you big time, never go back there, if you know whats good for ya..... :)

Edit: Maurice is right, smaller dealer, much better. Thats why got my truck at the smallest oldest dealer around!

 

Heck yea thats a major ripoff, that at most should cost (if you were to get the parts and do it yourself) at most $300 if it really needed to be done. Figure 50/ea for the ball joints, ~65 for an alignment, and then some bushing would be about 30-40 or so.

 

Flat out shame,ball joints and control arms are kinda common on Rangers,BUT when the truck don't need it,it makes other dealers look bad....sway bar bushings????,not very common at all on Rangers,sure glad you didn't go for it!

That's absolutely rediculous. I guess the figured if you've got $26 to pay for an oil change, you probably don't even know what balljoints are, much less what they'd need to replace. The fact that they told you that they have a loaner car waiting for you was a pretty good giveaway IMO.

 

Not neccessarily.....Every small dealership where I live is a scam. They have the advantage of being close to the customer bas whereas big dealers are out in commercial districts with a decent drive time but have a big reputation to maintain.

Hell, look at my situation. Small town Ford(less than a 1/4 mile from my house) super fukt up, refused to admit fault even though it obviously was at fault 100%, and did want to take any kind of responsibility. They did enough work to get my $500 deductable because they didn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to get money out of my insurance company. Now I take it to the BIG dealer and they call me every step of the way with my engine swap and are even trying to help me out as far as what the insurance company is being charged versus what I'm going to have to pay.

 

Actually, there were about 500 Rangers put out in I think either `01 or `02 that have nano technology built in that enables the the truck to completely repair itself. It can even change it's own oil. However these trucks ran roughly 38 million dollars and were not available to the general public.

what year is your truck and how much did you pay??????

 

i would have asked the president to meet you at the dealership and asked if he would accompany you and his mechanic under the truck and they could show you which ball joints were bad and why.. before the truck was put in the air make the mechanic confirm it was the same truck they serviced before.. make em look stupid in person.
That being said I KNOW bayshore ford. I have a buddy who lives right down the street there from the car wash near it. I was out visiting him one day and made a remark how i liked a truck in there, ( this guy is a truck enthusiast and is a chevy guy) but he told me not to even look at that dealer they were nothing but a ripoff and he told me a couple of stories that he knew what went on in there so clearly its an across the board thing with that dealership..

 

I love how some dealerships do that... they instantly try and get you to just assume that the problem needs to be fixed immediately like you don't have an option and just have to pay the grand bill. If people were kind of shy I could see them getting roped in really easy not wanting to say no.

Just pisses me off. Glad to know you just told them to blow it out their ***.

 

If it was really that bad where you couldn't even drive it and they wanted to charge me $960, I would have to say kiss my a$$ and call a tow truck and ship it to my house.

That sounds very seriously not worth his time.. He's wasted enough of it as is.

Ball-joints strike me as a nice, universal, moderately pricey thing to have 'go wrong' at the stealership. 99% of the population doesn't even know (or care) what a ball-joint is. They aren't going to ask questions. Those '$25' oil changes are schemes to get you in the door. No doubt about it.

I've had similar issues w/ the dealership I bought from. They were fantastic when I bought the truck, but have absolutely sucked regarding service. In the end I broke down and took the truck to another, smaller local dealer that couldn't even get close to the bigger dealer when it came to pricing the truck, but they've been fabulous w/ service.

Although now that I am out of warranty I am bringing it to the neighborhood guy.

Yeah after they rip you off when you buy the truck, they want you to come back for oil changes. Then they tell you you need this and that, or replace that. After i bought my truck i never went back for anything. I found a local shop to do all my work.

 

Brakes are a common thing too. People know brakes are important but don't know how to check what's wrong with them.

 

heck i had sears tell me not three hours after i had installed new ones lol years later it was told in the news that sears had been charged all over the country tons of times with doing work they werent suppoused to cause it wasnt needed While 04Edge is right that there are prolly better ways to check the balljoints than just wiggling the tires, there is also a difference between showing some wear and wear warranting replacement.,, I have a 2wd automatic ranger and have 147K on the truck and have four original ball joints..all NYC and surrounding area driving with exception of a couple of long road trips i know the left lower is starting to go so parts can last a real long time it all depends on what youre hitting with them ball joints

 

I hate dealerships so much, I've never brought mine to a shop every. My G/F brought her car to an autoshop, its a nice little shop and they ****ing ripped her off. She ran into a curb really hard and bent her tie rod. Ok so her mom and her brought her car in before I could tell them I'd do it for free all they have to do is buy the parts. While they were there the guys broke her heater box and never fixed it, they just told her that it would be fine. It all started with me just thinking that she popped her tire so I jacked the car up got the rim and tire had my friend get a used tire that was fine (free from his dealership, its a junk tire) and put it on the rim and put it back on. Well one of things they replaced was the ****ing tire on the car. It wasn't even the same tire so they just did it anyways. I hate dealerships, oh yea after she got her car back a friend of mine told me at that dealership they purposely break **** on peoples cars so that they have to get it fixed. He heard it from someone that was there before him. He is a Chevy mechanic and a good one, one of the best you'll find and truthful.

 

eh thats not THAT bad. my cousin bought a 60K F350 about 7yrs ago or so, his wife totalled it. insurance refused to cover it, cause the dealer put the wrong vin down on the paper work

and then when we bought our 95 e350 from our cousin we went thru the same dealer, they AGAIN put the wrong vin number down on the paper work..

last i heard, lawsuit over medical bills was some where around 1 million.... still on going... its ruined my cousins credit tho. that basil ford on walden in cheektowaga.

mineke said i needed new pads and rotors, and some other crap to the tune of like $500 when i went there for an inspection.... mind u truck had 13,000 miles on it.

 

Yeah that is funny. I bought my truck from one of the biggest dealers in central ny and yet to go back to them either. My last ranger had a balljoint bad but i didn't know it t'll i felt my truck starting to wounder alot. I took the front tire and could move the whole tire back and forth/up and down. I knew right away that was not suppose to happen. Thank god the small dealer fixed with my warranty with no hassles.

 

Hey man you should go to Pennsville Auto Service on Hook Rd. I personally know them (thats actually were my ranger is sitting with the motor half done because I don't have time to work on it).

Bayshore took that dealership over and the last I heard they were trying to repair the crap reputation that Riverview Ford had left. I guess it seems as if they aren't doing so hot.
