Extended Warranty
Extended Warranty! How can I go wrong? Homer Simpson
Buying a 2008 Ford Ranger with 3 months left on the basic and 2 years/3 months on the powertrain. The "dealer" offered me, well not offered, rather than wrote in the financing agreement to extend the warranty (third party). A $1500 cost which will cover most of the items covered by the basic warranty.
I think the Ranger, an XL Reg Cab with a 2.3 manual, is pretty bulletproof. Hard on ball joints I hear. Any advice on other common problems with the 2008's or trucks from that general era would be appreciated.
Thanks

It is a Ranger XL.
What is there to even go wrong on that truck?
How do you think a warranty company (insurance is really what it is) makes their money? It is like gambling at a casino, the house wins. Occasionally someone will come out ahead if there is a major mechanical failure, and it falls under the guidelines of that LONG contract that you sign, and their "adjuster" (yes they use adjusters) decides to cover it.
Just some food for thought.

PS, ball joints don't cost anywhere near $1500. And a 2wd Ranger should go a long time before needing ball joints.
Oh I'll add another thing. The finance guy is paid on commission, just like a sales person. Extended warranties, gap coverage, etc are all negotiable. If you paid $1500 it costs the dealership significantly less.
