Noise power steering pump
 

My power steering pump on my 94 2.3L whines too much for my liking. It works fine though. Is there any additives that I can use to shut it up???

check fluid levels...

1) check fluids

2) if that doesnt work..BEAT it with a big wrench then move onto step 3

3) replace!

levels are good, and I've beaten' many different parts with wrenches, but I was hoping there was a product called Ford in a can that could fix it....

GET USED TO IT! all Fords have a power steering whine......There is NOTHING you can do about it.....even if you replace it, the new one will whine also...........unless you switch over to the rack and pinion steering found on a '98+ Ranger, there is NOTHING you can do.....and swapping to the rack and pinion steering would be A LOT of work on the TIB Ranger....

even my 99 whines a little when i turn and my fluids and pump are fine, so maybe its just a ford thing...

I replaced my power steering pump twice... flushed the fluid numerous times... still whines... even the "new" ones. Unfortunately you can't get a brand new one... they're all remanufactured. You might get lucky and get a nice one. But all the ones I've put in... whine... it's just a Ford thing I guess...

My 2001 whines like a baby, actually the way I endure it is to leave it parked and drive my Grand Cherokee!!!

Mine whines when it wants something...like a drink of PS fluid. If you don't use the right KIND of fluid, it will whine more than usual. If it's LOW on fluid, it will SCREAM AND CRY every time you ask is to perform a task.

rangers take atf not powersteering fluid. Atleast I know 98+ do. That contributes a lot to noise. My noisy pump stopped being noisy after it got atf.. weird I know..

all Rangers take MERCRON atf...

Mine dosent 'whine' at all....Only at full crank, and its more of a whistle noise.

Back when I turned the steering wheel with the engine cut off because I didn't know any better, air got into the system, and it whined like a turbo spooling up. Now, its pretty quiet, but it does have a little noise when you turn the wheel.

YES! I was just waiting for someone to confirm that. I haven't had time to ask but I'm gonna try that. I heard that they took atf but talked to some guy and he said "nahhh, just use the stuff that says 'power steering fluid' " I'm off the next two days. I'll try and sqeeze in a flush and fill...

EDIT: flush, fill... then according to ORR, the power steering fluid might have ruined my pump, if so I'll replace the pump and try again with atf this time.

I surely wouldn't replace a pump that is WORKING until you throw some synthetic ATF that meets the Mercon spec. in it.

I sucked out all my old black fluid, re-filled it with synthetic, rocked the steering back and forth (not full travel, but close) for about two minutes, repeat about 3 times. This took about one full quart.

Surely that's not the best way to drain and flush, but it GREATLY lessened my noise.

I stubbornly refuse to break the integrity of the factory PS lines (that don't leak) to flush out the old fluid.

I'll do some more PS flushing when I change the oil on or about March 21st., but for now, it's quieter.

Worth the $$ to try it. One quart of synthetic ATF was only ~$6.

I've heard good things about it but I haven't tried it yet. If it's as good as Lubeguard transmission additives it wouldn't hurt.

It's increadibly easy to unplug the return line to the PS pump and have that drain into a pan under the truck... I did a full flush yesterday with atf and she's a little quieter... I've kinda given up on the noise problem though :lick:

i just deal with it, its not that bad.

Well I didnt do a complete flush but I changed out some of the power steering fluid with ATF and its ALOT quieter. Stupid me thinking that a power steering pump should take power steering fluid!!!! lol

Mine likes to whine when i start climbing stuff. I've checked the fluid level and its fine. After a while sitting on level ground, it goes away. Must be starving when im climbing.

What you need to do is get ahold of a vacuum pump with a power steering reservior adapter. I have SEEN this work with my own eyes.
You start the engine, take the cap off the reservior and put this pump on. Pump it a few ties to build up vacuum in the PS system and then turn the wheel from side to side a few times. Once you reach full turn on one side hold it for about 30 seconds (dont hold it against the stops though). Then turn it back the otehr way and repeat with that side. Do that cycle about 5 or 6 times and the vacuum will suck the air bubbles out of the fluid. Add fluid accordingly. That will pretty damn near get rid of the moans, with a newer pump it should get rid of the noise completely.
