LOOK-->Why a Maunal for 4x4
so i thought i would start a little discussion on why ppl say it is better to have a manual trans for off roading... personally i think that it is easier to have a auto and if you want to stay in first jus put it in lo on the colum or w.e.... i may not be the best at usin a stick but i seem to burn the clutch a lil tryin to climb a over a rock or w.e... whats everyones input??

You get more engine braking with a stick. I have learned to crawl in low without using gas were as in a manual the idle speed will get you going a little too fast.
Auto has the advantage of not rolling back when you start moving forward up an incline but if you know how to drive stick well then you wont have that problem.

I like my manual for mud, just because you can really rock it back and forth without worring about the trans. But for crawling, I am kinda torn. If you have proper gears, then you shouldn't have to worry about your clutch with a manual and I find they have the same ability to finess over obsticles.
But I agree with Stone, it is all in how and where you wheel.

They aren't overrated. They give you more control if you know how to use it properly. The problem is that most people don't know what they are doing when they drive stick.

I use low ALOT. Alot more than High range. It helps alot when crawling, or even in the mud, AND IS ALOT EASIER ON THE CLUTCH.

I've got good, I prefer my manual ANY DAY crawling.. and thats not from second hand say say.. Also, auto's tend to get starved for fluid depending what your doing then they act up (that is what i've heard)
I have aftermarket covers on my pedals and their pretty close together so i can use my right foot on the brake and gas at the same time to start off on a steep hill, or situation where I cant afford to roll back.
its presonal preferance, but the manual is the way to go IMO.. if you can't make a climb in 1st gear you have the option of starting in 2nd and not having the trans shift at an unexpected point, I can do mud in 3rd and 4th in low..
I'm just bias, i hate automatics..
also, like a few people have said, you can rock it much easier, don't have to wait for the trans to shift blah blah, you also have the ability to dump the clutch if need be.
just gotta learn how..
