what do you mean? what are you comparing them too?

3.73s wont be as perky but are better for the highway
little more of a road gear for our ranger trucks

4.10s are lower and allows our trucks to have a little more get up and go.
better for wheeling...

a 4.10 gear ratio means that the pinion gear rotates 4.1 times for each rotation of the ring gear. Meaning your driveshaft rotates 4.1 times for each rotation of your wheels. This is good for transmitting torque to the ground either in an off-road situation, or when accelerating from a stop, or when towing something. Its benefits run out on the highway though, when your engine has to work harder and spin faster to keep your truck running at highway speeds. The 3.73 gears won't let you accelerate as fast and will strain your transmission more if you are towing, but you can cruise at higher speeds with lower RPMs on the highway, giving you better fuel economy.

3.73 also with your truck will get slighly better gas millage but not have as much power.

4.10 is the just opisite it will have more power and just a little less gas millage and is alot better if you ever want to upgrade to a larger tire

ill bet money on it a 4x4 ranger with stock tires and 3.73s will get worse gas milage than with 4.10s

With what motor? Under what conditions? That's a pretty broad statement, and is only partly true.

That's true, you'll probably have to give it more go-pedal to get it moving. If your driving is vast majority highway, you ought to see some better mileage. IMO not enough to cover the decreased city performance and the cost of new R&P and install in the front and rear.

I'll agree under the premise that a percentage of the driving is city. On the highway I believe 3.73's will do better WITH THE EXCEPTION of strong headwind conditions. Were we talking about an OHV 4.0l on the other hand...

I have a 3.0 and went with bigger rims and tires. Stock was 225/70/14 (26.4) and i now run 255/70/15 (29.1). I have 3.55 gears and have definetly noticed a mpg increase on the highway. I normally run 70-80 mph just to stay with the flow of traffic here and rpms are alot lower. At 70 mph with the smaller tires i would be doing 2600 rpm's and with the larger tires i now run 70 at 2000 rpm's in 5th gear. Its a bit slower on takeoff for sure...but i like it because it seems like the gears dont wind out as fast. Once your rolling the power is there :)

It is 10% off so at about 64 on the speedo im doing 70. I know odometer will be off too but the way ive judged my gas is by my trips to work. I drive 85 miles a day roundtrip. Before the tire change i was putting $20 every other day and used every bit of it. Now with bigger tires i have a little leftover.... id say a 16th of a tank. Ive been paying between $2.65 and $2.75 a gal for Premium gas (93). After calculating (roughly) i know i get about 25mpg verses 22mpg i was getting before on the highway. I know this isnt very accurate but i know i end up with about a quarter of a tank extra in a weeks time. My ride to work is 95% highway, if i used this truck around the city i would definetly regear.

im talking about the SOHC it has no low end torque. it performs its peak at higher rpms.

i ran 85-90 on 33s and 4.10s to South Carolina, through the mountains and everythign and got the same mpg as i do driving around home.

I just got done swapping my 410s for 373s and I like it.It isn't as quick off the line but it just drives better all around. It is WAY better on the highway. As far as mileage goes,it is about the same, maybe slightly better with the 373's in mostly city driving.I have only been through 2 tanks so far and haven't taken a trip on the highway yet.BTW I have 255/70/16 tires.
