oil change: 5 quarts not coming out?

so i noticed today that when i was filling up the 1qt jugs with old oil i just drained, i filled up about 4 1/2 qts, which is obviously less than the 5qts i poured in 5k miles ago. is that too much to be short, or is that a normal discrepancy after considering some undrained oil and oil residue in the drain pan, etc?

4.5 is normal. You can have a certain % of evaporation. You wont ever get all the oil out of the filter. ETC. Also just the oil coating everything in the engine..

Between the residual in the pan, engine and filter... that will certainly make up the remainder.... The only way you would get 5 quarts when draining the pan would be if the engine were over filled....
The 4.5 quarts is normal as the others have posted.....

I always use gallon and 1/2 gallon juice containers to take my old oil to the recycling place, and I've never had anything different than about 4.5 quarts.

Look in your owner's manual to be sure, but 5.5 qts. sounds like too much. Most Ford engines (save for diesels and some V8s) take 5 qts.

3.0 takes 4.5 quarts w/ oil filter change. The 4.0 is 5 quarts I believe. 5.5 is too much for the 4.0, and wayyyyy to much for the 3.0.
