Oil change: Hot or Cold

When you do an oil change do you do it with the engine warmed up or cold?

I always do it warmed up thinking I will get a 'better" oil change with it being hot.

MothMan999 Feb 25, 2010 07:11 PM

I did it hot ounce but burned the $hit outa my arm on the cat. Never again.

Igobytwitch Feb 25, 2010 07:12 PM

I usually do it like 5 minutes after i went and bought the oil in the first place... so it's scalding hot and i get it done quick

sniper_101 Feb 25, 2010 07:12 PM

When the engine is Warm to Hot, oil flows better when heated, letting it drain quicker and out of smaller crevices that thicker oil won't (or at least in a reasonable time).

Plus where's the fun in changing oil if you don't have to dodge warm exhaust pipes and streams of oil . . . :ponder:

Redrocket Feb 25, 2010 07:18 PM

i change it hot.

David N Feb 25, 2010 07:19 PM

Warm. But then again, one would think, that if your vehicle had been sitting awhile, most of the oil would have ran back down into the pan, therefore draining more of the "bad" oil out...?

I usually take the truck for a drive, up to full operating temp. Then pull it right in the garage and get out the tools I need, get the filter ready, oil out etc. So I guess what I'm saying is I change it while hot.
Flows out quicker and the truck keeps me warm when laying on the cold floor!

zabeard Feb 25, 2010 07:23 PM

hot

filmont Feb 25, 2010 07:41 PM

Oh, I like it hot and steamy!

RazorsEDGE Feb 25, 2010 07:47 PM

Hot. I've changed it cold before and it took forever to drain which made me think there would be more old oil left behind.

korey89 Feb 25, 2010 07:51 PM

hot!

Ace Feb 25, 2010 09:49 PM

07rangersport Feb 25, 2010 10:16 PM

Coleosis85 Feb 25, 2010 11:35 PM

t3ob Feb 25, 2010 11:54 PM

silverfox Feb 26, 2010 12:19 AM

i change it hot on my truck because i go get oil and filter then drive it up on ramps and get to work

01_ranger_4x4 Feb 26, 2010 03:51 AM

i do it warm, not hot. ive burned my arms too many damn times doing it while everything is still hot as hell. not much worse than hot oil on your face!

Tys 4x4 FTW Feb 26, 2010 04:41 AM

V8 Level II Feb 26, 2010 04:50 AM

gts007 Feb 26, 2010 10:03 AM

usually end up doing it when its somewhere between hot and cold

04blackedge Feb 26, 2010 10:12 AM

I normally let it cool down 15 minutes after I go to the store so I guess warm. I'm about to get one of those oil plug drain valves so no more playing don't drop the drain plug in the old oil game!

meathead Feb 26, 2010 10:18 AM

I let it sit for 15 - 20 mins or so. Long enough to settle into the pan, but still warm enough to flow quickly and thoroughly...that's what I tell myself anyway.

rolsmojave3 Feb 26, 2010 11:46 AM

Hot so all the **** in it is stirred up....more incentive to work fast.

Crunchy Feb 26, 2010 11:56 AM

Hot.

I live in Canada, its cold up here. Helps keep the hand warm while working in the cold.
