Why wont this truck (3.0) keep a "full" level marking. Its on level ground and it will never stay full. It always burns if off to be 3mm under full on the dipstick. I go to lube express and the guy showed me the stick at full..drive 100 miles, check it, 3mm under full...add to top it off...drive...3mm under again..

 

Year and miles? It is supposed to be between the marks anyway.

 

Simple, you're either burning oil or you have a leak...

 

Its an 05 with 16000 on it...its not a leak and runs great. I highly doubt its either. I cannot make any sense out of it..Its not buring it for sure because it will stay just under the full line as stated before but wont stay at full

Does it quit loosing oil after the initial drop, or continue at the same pace?

 

It's a possibility because you are CLEARLY losing oil somewhere.

 

It's going somewhere and staying like the heads or a little bit is getting sent through your intake...3mm..who cares...now if it was 1/2" that'd be a larger deal.

 

when are u checking it? right after you shut it off? try checking the dip stick after ALL the oil drains DOWN thru the engine after like an hour or more or even after the whole night.

If you check your level right after you shut it off it wont register as high on the dip stick but if you wait you will get a much more accurate level.

 

Ive measured cold/hot like you said but its still manages to disappear lol I top it off when i check it because its always the tad low and next week ill check it and its there again. but it wont go lower than that level

 

Hey, you'll never need another oil change, cause you keep topping off with a constant supply of new.

 

Look, if you are TRULY loosing oil and you don't have a leak then your truck is BURNING IT!!!! Why it is burning oil at low miles is debatable, but there IS a logical explanation and if I was a betting man I would bet ( for what ever reason ) your engine IS burning oil.

 

I hate to say this but this is NOT logical and defies common sense and reason!!

You stated it WILL stay just under the full line!! SOOOOOOOOO if you check it and it at the ( just under full line ) and you drive 3,000 miles or a bit more with out ever checking it until then, then it should still be at the ( just under full line ) PERIOD!! assuming it is not using any oil at all, right??

I am here to tell you you CAN ad to much oil, so by your logic you can't over fill your truck because it will ALWAYS slip back down the dipstick a little , right, are you following me???

Here's what you do, put in the correct amount of oil in, stop obsessing on your oil stick, drink a beer and relax and I promise all will be well

 

That would be correct bud and I know, it doesnt bother me because it stays at that mark i just wanted to ask to see if anyone had this happen, I dont see how it does but

You fill your crankcase to the "full" line? I've always filled it just below the line.

Sounds like you have an oil leak or burning oil.....as stated a million times before.

 

I think 96 ranger and I solved the problem. Lock the thread, I think we are all dumber now.

You may have a small leak that you can't see cause the Cat. will make that little of smoke go away. So you may not even know you have a leak.
