P0171, increase mpg?

Vehicle is a '96 Ranger, 4 cyl, 5 speed, 2WD.

I recently got a check engine light which Autozone told me is a "P0171 System too lean bank 1". I haven't confirmed this yet, but I seem to be getting better fuel mileage... I'm at around 340 miles with 1/8 tank to go, I usually get to 320 or so as I'm rolling into the gas station on E.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I understand there's a good chance my fuel gauge is coincidentally on the fritz, and I'm about to run out of gas... any thoughts?

Thanks!

My fuel mileage went up about 30-40 miles to a tank of gas when that code came up on my truck as well. But only for 4 months. Then the mileage went really shitty. Now I'm only averaging 200 miles to a tank of gas. But I also need to replace my lower intake gasket. It's leaking to the point I can hear it in the cab.

interesting. looks like I should check into it before too long, my inspection/emissions run out at the end of August anyway.

sorry about that, I posted here first then thought it might have been better to post in the 4-cyl section.
