Part ID

Hi guys,

I have an 86 ranger 2.9. I just picked this truck up a few weeks ago. Its got 95xxx miles. But its getting pretty bad fuel mileage about 10mpg in town. So I've been under the hood trying to figure stuff out. Replaced the plugs and wires, air filter, new oil and filter too.

It does seem to surge a little at idle, but runs fine at speed.

I did notice there's a large hole in the muffler, so I guess i'll be replacing that.

Anyway there's a part under the intake right next to where the radiator hose connects to the water pump. It looks like an O2 sensor, but I can't figure out what it is. Can't find it in my Chilton's.

Anyone have any clue what it might be? It's pretty corroded and beat up.

You said it is next to the water pump, is it in apart where water is? I would say it is a temp sensor. How many wires going to it?

I cracked it open and some coolant came out. Two wires. One runs over to the passenger side of the engine into that wire harness, the other down somewhere under the power steering reservoir
