...as I yelled ****!...`

So I'm driving home tonight and get to a stoplight. I make the left, then I glance at my mirror and see a cars taillights coming away from my back bumper... I start staring in my mirror, make a right, he does too. Still staring at my mirror, I see him fly up on my *** end as fast as he can as I make a right corner and I hold on because I see him coming and BAM!!!! ****! I just got rear ended. I slam my door open and he is backing up. I get his license plate just in case (glance over the car, Green dodge neon) as he drives away smoke boiling off of his engine. I jump back in my truck, start it back up, and chase him down as his car dies completely on the opposite side of the road.

Get the cops on the phone and he gets out (35-40 yr old6', male, white, scruffy beard about 6') and he is coming towards me yelling profanities and I'm telling the cop everything as it happens. Cops show up get the info and ask me "did you smell alcohol on his breath?" I nodded and said I did when he was coming towards me.

They do a field sobriety as I watch from my truck, which he failed horribly, next thing I know they are pulling something out of his pocket and putting him in handcuffs and in the back of the squad car. So now cop comes back to me and tells me they are booking him for DUI, possesion of narcotics, and hit and run. I'm thinking, thats good news. Then he says he had no insurance, no license, and no registration on the car... Well that F's me over.

But if you remember from a while back, the truck is going back in the bankruptcy. Pictures will be up tomorrow.

Question time.

1. what does a stepside bedside replacement run? and paint for that?
2. what does a bumper run?
3. For insurance people, does the check come to me and I choose a fix it shop or do they do it all? Do i just gather quotes?

i'm lost...

How bad is the bedside damaged? They are fiberglass and might be repairable. If you have to get a whole new bedside for it, it will probably cost at least $400 just for the one side, plus paint (probably another few hundred).

Bumpers are probably another $100 then paint depending on the trim of the bumper.

I'm sure your tailgate got busted up to so that is probably another $100.

You can probably score some stuff at a junkyard

Also, idk if you would want, but i have a completely stepside bed, needs a little here and there work, but i think its the same color as yours?? and i'm kind of near you (i'm on the other side of Mt. Hood from you):

Call your insurance company and they will let you know. normally they either pick a shop or you can pick you own. and the adjuster will come and look at everything they normally know the pricing of everything. But If you want you can normally do the work yourself if you have the skills. Bedside will probably be a couple hundred used. normally they price out the entire bed if you cant find the bedside. Paint all depends on where you go to have that painted, it can run anywhere between 100-900 (just guessing on that number there) as for the bumper you can probably snag a used one for about 100 or so

Just hang in there. and If I were you I would talk to a lawyer about suing his drunk @$$. They normally will talk to you for free if you are the victim and then they get paid a portion of your winnings if you win. I know here in VA they cant take more than 33.3% from the settlement.

Glad you are alright though

A complete new bed is around $4K maybe a little more if you can’t get all of the extra parts from your old one and then there is paint to match…
Try for a new bed and see if you can get it, the old one would made a good trailer.
Bumper is around $500
Tail light may be cracked in the mounting stud area and of course you want LED replacements…

GET ALL YOU CAN FROM THE INSURANCE COMPANY BECAUSE THEY WILL BE TRYING TO GIVE YOU THE LEAST THEY CAN.

Get a friendly shop to have them quote out new stuff, then go to the JY… and save.
I have found a lot of repairable Steppie beds in the JY; bumpers, not so many unless they are rusted to $hit !

That sucks man. I got rear ended a year ago at this time and the chick did not have any insurance. Luckily though they paid me without having to go through insurance but I doubt your guy has any money. Make sure you get your truck looked at. Mine didn't look that bad but it ended up bending the frame.

From the pictures, the bed doesn't really look all that bad. that looks easily fixable. As for the bumper, i'd hit up a local junkyard, around here a bumper is like $80bucks. but thats not too bad if you find one in good condition.

the 'glass is repairable, bumper will be cheap. Truck is going back with the bankruptcy so I'm not too worried about it. I plan on replacing the bumper and hiding the damage.

sounds like what I would do. No point in going all out and do a new bedside on a 10 year old truck.

I was too... lol Thanks friendly mods!

I looked at it more today, in the daylight, and noticed that the back cab wall was hit hard as well. The bed was tweaked and the body `mounts are bent as well. I'm thinking the frame should be straight but it may not be. so regardless, they will have to replace the driver side bed panel as well as fix the cab dents. then the body mounts.

I'd like to keep a good rapport with the loan company, which is why I wanna get it fixed, or at least as close as possible. I know it'll just go across the auction floor for 3000 tops but I'd like to do the right thing, for the most part.

i actualy was rearended at a stop sign about a year ago or so..all that was damaged was my bumper and the damage wasnt nearly as bad as yours. bumper was only pushed down maybe about an inch or two and plastic had little damage/scuffs. took the truck to guys insurance company to have it looked at and they wrote me a check for almost $500 for a new bumper and the plastic dress pieces, i was really surprised. ended up just bending the bumper back up with a little heat and pry bar. only really for looks since i really dont tow anything with the truck or have a hitch.

sucks to hear that. you might talk with the loan office. i took out a loan on my truck, and part of the loan included additional insurance to cover the loan if something happened to the vehicle. the bed looks completely repairable, and a roll pan may be cheaper to find than a bumper.

My sister has an 04' Ranger and she got rear ended at christmas. They ended up giving her about $6000-7000 because she needed a step side bed too. We picked up a used step side bed for $700 at the junk yard and painted it for a few hundered more. We paint out own stuff. The bumpers are costly so we made one out of steel and painted it back for the time being but you could probably find a used one when you find the bed.

We needed a whole bed because the floor was buckled, a tail gate, a bumper, and the cab was damaged from the bed.

From the pictures it didn't look like you needed a whole bed though. But thats my experience with the same type of hit.
