Yeah wait out the gas prices. Up here they are already falling. They only up to $3.20 but are back down to $2.91

My buddy just bought himself a 'new' car. He upgraded from a ~96 Golf w/ well over 150k miles that was feeling it's age (recurring CELs, blown struts, exhuast problems) to a 2003 Jetta GLI w/ 22k miles. The thing is fawkin' sweet! I haven't followed the VW's in a while, but I guess this is the fully deluxe package. He's got the 24 valve 2.8L VR6 w/ the 6-speed trans. The interior is loaded, leather, heated seats, upgraded sound system, the works.. It STILL set him back some $18k! That's almost what I paid for my comfortably equipped 4x4 when I bought it brand new!

Wholey snikeys the thing is fast! It accelerates like a sport bike.. after ~2k it just explodes and the tach seems to move faster and faster until it hits the rev limiter. Pretty amazing car. I just got to drive it around the 'hood.. but I can instantly see how such a car would get me in trouble.

He was in the market for a hatchback. But couldn't find anything he was interested in, new or used. Seems such cars are pretty damned popular right now..

get a beater and a bike
I bet you only pay $350 more for insurance on the car and $200 for the bike

VW's sold in Europe are assembled in Europe.
VW's sold in the US are assembled in Mexico.*

There's a huge difference in my opinion.

(* Except some 'Wolfsburg' and other special edition packages. *)

Edit: And I swear the European VWs are geared/powered differently than the US spec cars are. My buddy's dad had a VW Passat. It was the same year and the same model as my father's. Both had the (I ferget how big) 16-valve I4 w/ a 5-speed manual. I remember sitting in the passenger seat in complete disbelief as my buddy took his dad's Passat up to ~220 KPH (~135 MPH) w/ ease.. w/ four people in the cabin.. and their lugage for two week's stay! Dad's car was needled to 120 MPH.. it would do it, but it would be a strugle. The only differences I could find were that my buddy's car lacked AC and all the electrics crap. But I don't think that explains it all. They're doing things slightly differently for the European market.

Like I said, huge difference if you ask me..

sorry Bubba but I do not think the Touareg and especially the Phaeton sold in the USA are made in Mexico
