I'll try to get to the point fast enough for people to read this, but to sum it all up: please be extremely careful if you are going to Pismo soon, the out of town-ers (and by that I mean people that don't utilize the dunes responsibly) are causing big problems out there.

I finally got the truck running and prepped to go to the dunes a couple weekends ago (this is why I haven't been on here much lately), slapped it on the trailer and went out earlier on Saturday morning with my fiance and another friend to ride third. We get out there, unload, park the tow rig, and get buckled up, with the truck still running fine. We had a blast and the truck handled so well out there for about 40-45 minutes when I decided to go over to the area they just opened up (Snowy Plover breeding areas when it's the right season). We were coming off of the pipleline trail at about 50 (where people are normally going very fast) and being 1:00 out with no shadows no sooner than I had left the pipeline than we hit about a 3.5' berm in one of those goddamned motorcyle tracks people build for their kids to ride. In about 7 feet or so we went from 50 to zero with never having applied any brakes. Got out, with the motor running very rough (so I turned it off), and looked my front suspension over to find my driver wheel stuffed into the cab and my glass broken.

We actually got it loaded back on the trailer backwards, as both tires were in opposing directions, and headed on home. We got back and kept the truck on the trailer so I could get under it easier and inspect everything. Turns out that my rear lower arm mount is ripped halfway off of the frame, cracks elsewhere on the front portions of the frame spidering multiple directions, broken fiberglass, and . . . no sooner than I took the truck off of the trailer, and I literally mean RIGHT when the rear tires hit asphalt, the truck stalled out and won't start JUST like it was doing three months ago. I am talking to Scott and Jerry about my kit, as the spindles look like they could POSSIBLY be bent as well (this is NO attack on Camburg, I am stating facts and I ask that no one starts **** in this thread). I'm about to lose my nerve with this truck, and am debating selling it right now due to all of the issues and lack of money because of vet school. I'm over the problems, and what's worse is that I don't even know how to fix the motor and don't have the resources for a swap right now.

For the devil's advocates: I am always conscious of the tracks out there that people leave behind, but the one that we hit was in an area that people are flying in, and not near a camp whatsoever. This is the second time I have had frame damage from someone's leftover mess on the beach and I am utterly disgusted with the neglect people show by leaving their mess for someone else to get hurt in. Thank God I am a stickler on safety and require all passengers to be strapped in as tight as can be and wear full-face helmets at all times. The impact left us (mostly my fiance) with moderate whiplash, back problems for the next week or so, and some sore shoulders and arms.

PLEASE clean up your messes at the beach, and I include these man-made tracks as mess because one day someone is going to get killed, whether in a vehicle not so capable as mine or an under-experienced kid on an overpowered bike.

I am very disappointed with people who use our recreational lands in such a naive manner.

 

i think its the fact the some people only think in a short time manner. they don't trace actions into the future to really see what they can do. or even better, realize that actions even effect other people.

i respect that fact that you restrain all occupants, as many of us don't. i'm also glad that nobody was seriously injured. but it's sad to say that sometimes only serious injury must occur before actions are taken.

Well put. That should go for all trails and every Offroad vehicle area. People need to respect others on public property!

this goes right along with Tread Lightly! i see it every time i open up petersens 4 wheel. ever since i saw that, i try to think about stuff like that.

 

I hate people that tape off areas for their kids. They are just to lazy to actually ride with their kids so they tape a huge section off and sit at camp and do nothing. I usually drive through those areas. I could care less. It's not their land.

Last time I was there we came in one path to our spot. We woke up and someone decided they wanted more room so they extended their space and blocked the path. We has 2 2wd trucks that barely made it through there and everywhere else was worse.

 

Yeah it's such a bummer because it was the first time back out in three months after getting the damned thing running again, and now it has the same issue back again, and I still have no clue what the problem is.

I hate to be a "rat" but people really need to start taking care of our lands before someone gets really hurt. Thankfully we're all fine now, I just wish I had the resources to rebuild the truck and have fun before vet school starts. Pretty upset because I don't have the time nor money to put into fixing it right now before I go to school, and if I end up goint go Edinburgh, Scotland, it will be a long time coming.

Every time I see someone partitioning off the beach like that for their "camp," I feel like tearing thier tape down. It's public land, like you mentioned, and I wasn't aware that people need a full acre of beach to camp on.

Yes. Look at it from head on, it's about a foot step down, and another couple of foot step up after that. It was a lot worse than it appears here.

 

As much as that sucks you have left me with some good pics. LOL I will be out there in June and can't wait to go!

What makes the grooves in the sand? Soemthing somone else was driving?

As for the frame can you just pull it back in and plate it up?

I'm guessing people think it's a good idea to make a little curvy path for their kids to play around on, then don't fill it back in when they're done.

 

Well when you wheel your truck at 50+ mph that **** is going to happen. You cant expect that every single place you go to be perfect and just like you think it should be.

I would say that if this has happened to you more then once then you need to look at where you are going to wheel before actually doing it.

I mean once is one thing but to totally **** up your truck a second time really sucks.

 

I agree i dont see how you can be pissed that someone else was doing basically the same thing you were doing. Did you go back and fill in all the ruts your truck made? I dont think so. Its just a risk you take while off roading. Sucks about your truck though...

It sucks to see that happen. granted, what they did wasnt illegal, but its a matter of courtesy. Kind of like when i go to a car show with my Cougar. You can tell the people that arent into the hobby because they have a tendancy to touch the cars, and let their kids and crap lean all over something.

Its just rude, inconsiderate and people that are a little closer to the hobby tend to not do things like this.

 

so everyone that races around in a motorcycle at Pismo should fill in thier ruts so someone doing 50+ mph wont mess up their truck? I dont ride dirt bikes, so I have no idea what is considered "courteous" when riding... just asking

 

Yeah, well it sucks, but....
As you said, it's public property, and the people there before were simply riding. Perhaps they didn't bring a tractor to fix their ruts, lol.
That's what will happen cruising at 50mph without scouting. It sucks, but it's not really fair to ***** about someone else out there. It's not like they dug a trench to "get you".

 

Yhea try taking a black truck to a truck show you get there in the morning, the truck just sparking. Then you have to hit a couple time thru the day with spray wax to get rid of all the finger prints. The worst is in the fall if people are wearing jackets. Zippers are hell on paint!

That really suck for you dude We had a guy doin crap like that back in highschool. He had 44's on his truck and go around and just destroy mud holes so noone but him could make it thru the ruts. We fixed him with a backhoe and a much deeper hole than he was expecting.

 

Normal riders don't make huge burms like that. Hell our tire tracks aren't deep at all. People make little "courses" for their kids to stay in because they are too lazy to follow their kids around. Typical people that have the kids but don't want to take care of them.

Wow, I just remembered why I don't come on this site very often anymore.

For some of you to make claims like this is really childish. Riding out there normally doesn't cause deep berms in the sand like this, only planned, repeated use of one area. Filling in ruts with a tractor? Are you serious? I'm talking about a structure on public lands that is neglected when the builders leave the park. Others don't know about this, hence the risk for someone to get seriously hurt and possibly killed out there because of something like this is increased. A friend of mine just killed a kid out there two months ago because of failure to abide by offroad safety, I don't need the pessimists of this site telling me about what should or shouldn't be "*****ed" about. Whining is one thing, expressing anger about a potentially dangerous situation and airing my disappointment is another.

 

Trent some people will never understand. It really sucks about your truck and I am glad everyone was ok. Hope you find the time and money to fix the truck.

 

Thank-you for understanding the situation. Clearly you have a grasp of what respect means within a sport/hobby.

I'm not complaining about anything, I'm expressing my sadness not that people use OHV lands, but that people don't take care of the lands they use and fail to tread lightly.
