Power Steering Pump Removal
 

Sounds stupid but I can't get this pump off. All of the removal tools I have are too big to get in the bay even with the fan off and I need to remove the pulley to get the pump off, and vice a versa. Any advice? I've tried taking the ac and bracket off with it and still no go. Ford should've made some sense when they put these on, most vehicles I've worked on have a slot or opening in the pulley to allow the bolt to be removed. The pulley on my truck blocks the bolts holding the pump on. Help, haha.

Autozone will lend you the special tool for the ps pulley.I need to change one myself but I'm just going to change bracket and all since I have one. I've noticed that the 3.0 is probably worse than a 4.0 because of the a/c line routing.

The tool they have is a long one, and I don't think I'll have the clearance to get it to work . . . ? The only pullers they have are the 2/3 jaw pullers that are longer, they don't have the bolt pullers (by me anyway) and I don't want to pay $41.00 for the whole kit.

NEVER use a jaw puller on these pumps. You can get the proper tool at Harbor freight for around $20-$30. It has a piece with a collar that slides around the slot in the pulley hub, and a bolt that threads into the piece and pushes against the pump shaft. Easy, quick, and MUCH shorter.

Those pulleys are not strong enough to survive jaw pullers. That's why there's no room for one! :wink:

I've never had a probelm using the "specialty tool" on any of the Ranger engines. 2.3, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0.

There's always been enough room/clearance to use this puller. "Tight fit" that's another story.

AutoZone has the free tool rental deal going on OR you can go buy one at Harbor Freight right now for like $10 bucks. Yes, Harbor Freight and from what I've been told it works every bit as good as the $50 dollar ones.

I didn't know if i should start a new thread with this or not but I'm replacing my pulley right now. I got the bolt puller from autozone. Pulling it off was easy but puttting the new one on is starting to be a pain. Seems like the one I got doesn't want to thread very far and has a lot of slop. I already damaged the first two threads on the bolt because i thought it was in farther. But thats as far in as it would go. Does anyone know what size bolt to use and the thread count?

We used a power steering pully remover and installer set that I bought from Advance. It worked well and did wonders. We finished with all of the process within 30 mins or so.

Do you remember what brand it was BigMan? Was it SAE or Metric, fine or coarse threaded bolt?

I can't remember but it did the job. It was a long bolt with a metal peice thing you put around the pully area and you twist it and the pully comes off and stuff. I have to see.

I'm gonna change the whole assembly out. Does anyone know the size flare wrench that I need to pull the high pressure line. I have a 11\16 that won't go on and a 18mm that seems a little loose. Would it be and do they even have a 17.5mm flare wrench.

I had the same problem so I used a cresent wrench...lol... worked fine

Yea, I gave up and used a crescent too. I was just worried about messing up the fitting. But I got everything back together and on the road again.
