I weather-proofed my splices using "liquid electrical tape" which is a flexible quick-setting rubber that is quite versatile. It turns a crimped butt-splice into an all-weather permanent connection.
You can also sleeve soldered splices with shrink tubing, and place a dab of the stuff in the ends of the shrink tubing before shrinking. The tubing shrinks on the rubber which sets quickly from the heat and you once again have a totally weather-proof splice.
