questions about amsoil tranny fluid
 

i'm going to be doing a tranny flush next week, and was thinking of changing over to amsoil. is it supposed to keep the transmission running at cooler temperatures than the regular mercon V thats in it? and where can i buy it?

Not a prob. I had Amsoil in my manual tranny in the Ranger and it felt alot better. I haven't fluid swapped the F-150 yet:)

the biggest advantage youll see with the AMSOIL fluid is the ability to keep it in 3 times longer than stock. the factory fluid should be flushed and filled about every 25k. the amsoil should be good for up to 75k. would i run it 75k? probably not, id probably go 50k, but im a fluid changing freak, so that doesnt mean anything :wink: AMSOIL will protect your tranny under the harshest conditions, and will perform much better than the factory fluid. most shops will do a flush and fill with fluid you bring as well, at my dealer they said they would charge just for an hours labor.

yes i have the 5w30 in the torino, not a leak anywhere, and it holds up well!!

I did the flush and I used about 12 quarts because I was sloppy, lol. You can do it with 11 if you are better at it than I.

I didn't monitor tranny temp prior to it, but our trannys can run pretty hot in uphill and stop and go driving. Mine gets up around 200 degrees, even with Amsoil. It's WAY below the danger level for the internal plastics of 250 degrees, and not hot enough to damage the Amsoil fluid.

Regular tranny fluid would begin breaking down at those temps and it would shorten it's life.

I had the same experience Ryan did -- my transmisssion REALLY smoothed out on the Amsoil -- especially that bumpy 2-3 upshift and 3-2 downshift.

would buying a case be cheaper?

How is the amsoil tranny fluid compared to the redline stuff.

I did a tranny flush on my truck when I bought it about 2 years ago. I flushed it because it was really hard to shift (it's a manual tranny). While draining the old fluid out, I noticed that the previous owner had put in rear end gear fluid instead of the normal stuff. I thought the tranny was shot, but I put in the redline stuff and it has been fine. There is just about 50K miles on the redline fluid by now.

Now the tranny gets a liitle tough to shift sometimes. As in it won't let me into any gear, But if I let it sit in neutral for about 20 seconds, it will let me in. BUT, this only happens once in a while.

I am actuall just wondering what you guys think about that redline oil. It is supposed to be really good, but would the amsoil stuff be better for the tranny????? Especially if it keeps it cooler?????

does anyone elses 2.3L bout die on hills? at the bottom of a little incline ill be going 55mph then at almost the top bout 35mph and i got stock tires and all

How many miles did you have on your original fluid before you switched over to Amsoil? I'm assuming you had the stock Motorcraft Mercon V stuff in there before the Amsoil. :cool:

I had about 40k when I switched the Ranger over. It was the stock fluid.

amsoil is awesome in the manual tranny... my shifts got much smoother ect like everyone else said

Picking up 1, 2.5 gallon "jug" of Amsoil ATF and 2 quart bottles of ATF fluid is cheaper (Saves you about $3 using their normal pricing) then getting the 12 bottle case of Amsoil ATF. :cool:

Around 30-35K I think. I did the filter also. I put the new filter in, sealed it up, put in 4 or 5 quarts of new fluid, then started and ran the tranny with the fluid cooler tube running into a quart bottle over a large basin. As I took a quart out, I put a quart in -- more or less. I went too far and ended up not keeping up and had to put 12 quarts total with the initial fill by the time I was done.

Any idea if the dealer drops the pan and changes the filter when you take it in for the "flush" (What I was thinking of doing but using Amsoil lube)? :cool:

the dealer has a machine that flushes it for them. so they are still lazy, but its dont correctly :wink:

My transmission was started to slip rather badly between the 2-3 shift, after I flushed out the old stuff and put the AMSOIL in, it slipped for about another week, and since then it's been clear skies and smooth shifting.

to be brutally honest its your posts that give the black eye. explain to us please what you have against synthetics

Why don't you get started? What have you got against synthetics? If you just want to bash Amsoil because of their marketing, etc. not interested. I AM interested in your opinions on synthetics.

What I don't understand is many old line mechanics that resist synthetics even with the proof that they are superior. I've run into several, and most are quite "emotional" about it, but seldom articulate anything substantive.

Bob, regardless of his opinion I have found him helpful and knowledgeable. We are synthetic partisans, but lets not get NASTY about it, lol.
