What is a good air intake system for a ranger? I want to do something about the air thing, my brother says "get on the ranger site and find out what they did". So here I am.

More than likely, all you are going to gain is more noise, and usually warmer air. Not to mention an oiled filter that doesn't filter well, and causes issues with the mass airflow sensor. Most aftermarket intakes actually draw warm air from the engine compartment.
The stock intake pulls cold air and does a good job of it. Purolator filters are pretty good in both flow and filtering smaller particles, but you probably won't notice any improvement over any other filter.
Removing the silencer will make a little more noise, but probably not gain any power either. The "silencer" is also a venturi which probably also smooths the air out as it passes through.

If you still feel like spending money on an intake, I suggest a Volant intake which comes with a sealed box and is available with a long lasting dry filter. Still, if you DO gain anything, it would be very small and only noticeable at very high RPMs.
If you want a little extra power, a tuner is a much more effective mod.

 

on a mod motor with other performance parts added yes
but a stock motor no lol you will just get noise

o and that will suck hot air form the top of your motor

 

That is going to increase air intake temperatures, and the oil can cause problems with the mass airflow sensors. Not to mention K&N filters do not filter all that well with smaller particles.

I wouldn't say unnecessary! I bought the K&N Cold air intake and I like it. It's 50/50 oh those who like it and those who don't. K&N does say that it gives you a little increase in power (10 HP at 4xxx RPM) Though I never get my RPM's up that high, it makes a nice sound inside the cab and it gives the truck a little bit of a better tone! IMO Try the free one first (its easy to do) and if your still not satisfied look up some. If you got the 3.0L You're limited, but the 4.0L Has a wide range of brands. OH and the 2.3L Had a few good ones too If i remember right!

What is an underdog pully and does it have anything to do with making the truck more powerful?

Under drive pulleys from Rogue performance or stuffforyourranger. Basically what it does it put a smaller pulley on the crankshaft reducing the drag the crank has from turning the accessories... I hear its quiet worth it... I plan on getting one as soon as I have the money.

An Air intake won't help on your stock engine, it will probably hurt performance if anything from sucking in the hotter air... I would do that silencer remover, and if you really want, do the rogue performance MAF mod and put a MAC intake tube on it... while keeping the stock box.

And a good tuner, puts different tunes on your computer to make more power or more economy by controlling the fuel injectors (increasing and decreasing the pulse its open controlling the amount of fuel) and the timing in newer vehicles.

Thats why you leave the stock air cleaner housing. Your replacing the tube from the box to the throttle body with the MAC tube. The MAF mod just removes some of the unnessisary material in the MAF housing. The stock air box already pulls in cool air from behind the headlight housing. The only way to get cooler air would be do make a ram air or snorkle and then insulate the tubing to the engine to help prevent heat from the engine bay heating up the tube.

 

Yeah...best thing to do is just a K&N filter. Leave everything else the same.
