Was my truck custom ordered?

Not necessarily. Dealers determine what they order for stock and pick their own packages and options on each car they order. Many times they order several of one configuration, but in different colors for example. Ford doesn't dictate what they order. I've seen dealers with on-the-lot 5-speed XLT's and FX4's...although not in recent years. Most dealers buy the configuration that sells best: 2WD single cabs, but you'll find a few still keeping a decent 4x4 on the lot...as production winds down, you won't see many of those anymore.

sounds pretty straight forward. a top of the line with a manual tranny. some people prefer manuals over autos, and don't consider them "lower".

They def. made alot more 4x4 auto than 5 speed for sure. When I bought my 02 in 2004, one of my friends was a salesman at the local deal (one of the larger ones in my area with muliple dealerships). I had him look for 4 months for a 4x4 4.0L 5speed. Couldnt find one. He gave me a great deal on the 02 4x4 auto so I pulled the trigger instead of waiting.
He gave me a figure on the auto to manual count but I forgot the number he gave me, but it was very low

as far as finding them. like i said it's all about preference when people ordered them. and it was also up to the dealer to decide if they wanted to risk ordering and putting a manual 4x4 on the lot to see if it would sell. everyone can drive automatic but not everyone can drive manual.

I often wondered if my truck 2007 was a special order as well. I've never seen an FX4 before with manual windows and locks. Ran the numbers on the door sticker. It has all of the FX4 hardware like 4.10 with LSD and Rancho shocks, Y-spoke rims, two tone seats and two tone paint, etc. Its like it was de-optioned to manual windows and doors, oh and no cruise either.

If I'm not mistaken, you could order a standard in pretty much every model except with the center subwoofer console 6 disc CD deck (hence why mine's an auto and not a manual). They're getting harder to find, though, but most folks prefer auto's for whatever reason. I'm split, I've owned both and prefer a manual, but with the crappy gearing that comes in the M5ODs I would rather have an auto instead to be honest.
Frosty, my roommate has an '07 FX4 (non-level II) with no power options/cruise either, and the regular steering wheel (non-leather). I don't know what year they made the leather-wrapped steering wheel standard with the FX4 package, but I ordered leather seats in mine because it already came with the leather-wrapped wheel and figured I'd just make them match. His '07 has virtually no options and even though it has 4.10s and a L/S, its the 28 spline 8.8 and not the 31 spline axle. Its basically an XL model truck but with the FX4 flares and two-tone paint job. It was one of 4 or 5 trucks sitting on the lot that the dealership ordered in and was selling cheap, and being that he was too impatient to wait for an optioned out truck he bought that one instead. They do exist, but I think that most folks who wanted to pay for the FX4 package also wanted the other options as well, whereas those who wanted the base model interior just bought an XL model instead - hope that made sense. I doubt it has anything to do with the tranny. More like "not everyone can drive during the winter"

I wish I would have seen this thread when it was started. You most definitely have a custom ordered truck. All the dealers ordered the XLT 4X4 trucks with 5-speed manuals to have manual windows and door locks. I learned this the hard way when I called 2 different dealerships and about 60 different salvage yards looking for a in-dash wiring harness. I ended up buying a in-dash wiring harness from an automatic 4X4 Ranger and there really wasn't much difference at all. The people that work at the JRs are a bunch dumb asses and meaner than a snake on top of it.
