ok i just took the ranger to the dealership for the 30000 mile service, and i had them check to see why it pulls to the right stopping..

anyhow, they said my caliper is sticking and the pads have warn unevanly.. they didnt say if the roter was warped or not, i personly think it is, but just very slightly...

i a have been kind of waiting for my pads to wear out to upgrade them as i do a fair bit of towing/hauling.. but i dont want to spend the money on better pads if i am just going to burn through them with my sticky caliper...

so my question is, the dealership said they where going to clean the caliper, i told them no (they wanted like 260 for the whole job) i figure i can do it myself... but what do i clean? do i just shot it with some brake cleaner?

and whats a good tow/haul pad? are thoes thermo quiets good for that job?

 

I have the Thermoquiets on my Edge, along with some drilled and slotted rotors. And I drive my truck pretty hard. I still have probably around 75% pads left and I changed them last year and 15k miles ago.
When I upgraded, I also changed out the caliper HARDWARE. That's probably what the stealership wanted to sell you. That is probably what was sticking. Now unless it was a major amount of uneven pad wear, I think that may be the culprit. Get new pads, better rotors, the caliper hardware (should come with the metal pieces that go in the caliper and on the bridge, and the rubber boots for the slide pins), and you should be good to go.

if your caliper slide pins were dirty/dry they could cause un even pad wear... if they are lubed you might have a caliper itself hanging up, which would indicate you either rebuild it or replace it. you might as well upgrade while you are there ... drill/slotted rotors are on my list to get done in the next few months .... how bad was the uneven pad wear?

you can buy the hardware at the same place as the pads...any auto parts store...as for the drilled & slotted rotors....I'm sure someone knows where to find some, hehe

i always replace the brake hardware whenever i do brakes, the parts are so cheap why not.

 

Dont get drilled or slotted if you wheel.. the mud hardens in the holes and its annoying
and it also makes it harder to clean em afterwards. Mine got all fawked up from wharton :( jacked up my new powerstop rotors.
