Greetings!
I have a 2003 edge ranger with 3.0 engine and the larger automatic
transmission usually found with the 4.0 engine. When I shift to reverse,
there is a slight hesitation before engagement. The same thing happens
in forward also but not as noticable. It has always been this way since
I bought the truck new. Is this normal? Other than that, it has been an
excellent truck to drive.

 

Yeah i started with the same configuration before i did the 5speed swap and it was like that to.

 

Thanks I thought so. Did you fix that timing cover leak yet?

 

Would you have bought a truck with the 4.0 instead of the 3.0? The 4.0 takes
conventional oil.

 

Yeah timing cover is good to go! Thanks for asking actually wasn't to bad. Not sure on the 4.0l I'm pretty fond of my little 3.0l i mean i run high mileage anyway so oil is no big deal people dog that motor pretty bad but i can get it t0 chirp tires through third gear and get better gas mileage than the 4.0l so its plenty for me.

 

Yes it was nice to get the timing cover gasket replaced. I had a one inch play timing
chain so replaced that and gears. I like my 3.0 too except the mileage could be better.
I have plenty of power but the 4 cylinder that came out later has the same hp but
not the same torque. Actually this is the first auto, always had 5 speed manuals.
Nice to have when you get older

 

Yeah my auto was nice but i wouldn't trade it back i love my 5speed! My stock mileage was pretty bad but after the ridiculous list of mods I've done its doing really well now surprisingly trying to figure out an exact MPG for it but i see at least 20 to 30 more miles per tank now. And my timing chain was rough i went ahead and did mine to.

 

So what are some quick and not too expensive mods that I can do for better mileage?
Also what tires do you recommend for all season? I have Goodyear Wranglers and
they are worthless on slippery roads even with extra weight in the bed?

 

The efan swap is probably easiest and cheapest i think i might have had $75 in it for the original way i did it i upgraded to a nicer controller that brought the price up a bit thats the cheapest noticeable gain. I got a replacement TYC fan off ebay for $40 or so and the two speed controller and odds and ends for wiring was like $35. Some people on here argue that its a useless mod bought it was one of my first and it wasn't done anywhere close to any other mods and i saw one or 2 mpgs from it and it definitely accelerates faster and idles much smoother so its a nice al around mod. Im not sure on tires before i went with the street truck look i was running pathfinder sports a discount tire house brand and they did really well and lasted a long time. They don't sell that exact model anymore but they have a new one not sure of the name thats supposed to be even better. They have a similar look to the wranglers as well if thats what your going for.

Hi, Your trans valve body pressure control valve came from the factory improperly valved to the incorrect pressure .I bought a new 2006 with no problems.
I attended Rocksprings Ga. area tech in 1969-70 an built these auto trans to complete my course. Take your truck to a qualified trans repair shop an have the valve bodys pressure relief valve spring adjusted to the proper pressure to resolve your low pressure problems. My thoughts .loc
