I used to own a XJ. I prefer my Wrangler over it. The Wrangler feels way more solid than the XJ over rocks.
I love the YJ because it has longer wheel base than the previous models and easier to work on. I hate anything newer than the YJ because it rides like a car with its retarded dash board and air bags. No offense to TJ+ owners.

Something is really effed up on your ranger...
I get almost 22 on the highway most of the time. 320 miles to the 17 gallon tank. I usually fill up at about 220-250 just so that I don't end up stranded with an empty tank. I've gone to 300 miles though, when it was still running on the worn out plugs and wires that I have now replaced.
3.0 liter, 3.73 gears, 5 speed manual.

i have a wrangler now and still have the ranger. i would much rather drive the ranger everyday. the jeep rides rough as hell gets the same mileage as the ranger. the jeep is nice on hot days where you can take the top down and doors off and go cruising.
if you are to do nothing but pure off road get a jeep there is so much more aftermarket parts.

I do like the Jeep Wranglers. I bottomed out my 2000 Silverado in mud the other day and a 1999 Dodge 1500 4x4 got stuck on the way to my truck. I finally got a friend to come get me out with his 05 Jeep Wrangler. It pull me out with no problem!
As far as Jeep vs. Ranger...I don't know. I jeeps deff have more off road mods available.

The main reason I'd go for an xj over a wrangler is because There is too much hype in the wranglers, around here you rarely see xjs that are set up for wheeling that look clean and id like to go for A clean look and to go along with the wrangler argument the new jks are crap, might as well get a H3, tjs I have respect for cause one winched us out when my buddies airbags went off in his ranger and I've seen what that TJ can do(lots of $ invested though), yjs well they are cool machines when done right but leaf springs all around make it a bumpy ride, and to the comment about get a xj and keep the ranger I would love too but I'm a senior in high school and can barely afford gas as it is(owner at the local BP said don't be surprised if its close to $6 a gallon by the end of summer)

I just sold my XJ to get my Ranger. I have had 4 XJ's and a TJ. If you want a wheeler, Jeep is sure hard to beat. If you want reliable, daily driver and sometimes wheeler, your Ranger should work with a few tweaks. I do miss my TJ almost every day though...I loved that Jeep. As far as fuel mileage goes, best to think of it like this.... Empty or Full. i.e, your Jeep is empty, or it is full. less stress that way when you figure it out and realize you are getting 8-10mpg...150miles from a 19gal tank sucks. Soft tops rock, but don't expect to really have any type of conversation at speeds above 50mph, especially if you have an aggressive tread tire. Make sure you get hard doors, full soft doors don't seal well and you will get wet in a hard rain. You want a jeep with a factory D44 rear axle if you are looking at TJ's. No Jeeps were manufactured in 96 btw...86-95 is YJ, 97-06 TJ's, 07-current JK's. Dont waste your time on a 4cyl, they suck. period. I have a wealth of knowledge about Jeeps...I'm an ex 4 wheel parts guy and have been in the largest Jeep only club in Texas for the last 5 or so years. Really comes down to what you want...not just what you think you want.
buy a stock Jeep and start from there. Don't get one that's lifted and tricked out and that some one else has already beat the tar out of.
01 TJ 4" short arm, 4.56's, locked both ends, 4:1 low range, D30HP/D44 w/ chromo shafts, 4L/5spd, 35 MT/R's and tons of other goodies.

I've got a friend who is always calling me while driving, no doors or top on his yj, radio turned all the way up and he's got some really aggressive M/ts, I normally just hang up as soon as he calls and he gets the point, didn't realize how many friends I have with jeeps, almost feels like peer presure lol

i had a '85 CJ-7. fun in the summer with the hardtop & doors off, but horribly cold in the winter. the short wheelbase rides horrible & for having the "big" 256 I-6 it seemed way underpowered. the ranger on the other hand has plenty of power, its warm in the winter, rides very nicely. only drawback is that the jeep could use "passenger car" licence plates, where the ranger is a non-comm truck plate, about a $25 more every year when the sticker renewal is up. the jeep was a fun toy, but unsuitable as a daily driver for me. i bet i only had the jeep 2 years, but my current ranger ive had over 10 years now. sure for "trail-duty" only, the jeep would be a winner, but if its your daily driver as well as a weekend warrior, id stay with a ranger chassis. mpg wise, my jeep got a fairly consistant 15 mpg, the ranger gets about 17, at best its gotton 19. if you could afford it, have both.

It is a lot cheaper to get a YJ and even to lift a YJ over a TJ. I'd just get a stock YJ (just make sure it is a six cylinder manual transmission) and swap out the Dana 35 for Ford 8.8. They're very easy to work on and I would also swap out the D30 for XJ D30 with no vacuum disconnect. If you're really into rockcrawling then it might be a good idea to go springs over for more clearance and better flex.
TJs are nice but they're a lot more expensive when you want to put a lift kit on a coil set up. They do ride well if you shell out the big bucks.

If I'm lucky I might get $3000 out of my ranger so I'm not gonna be putting a lot of money into it, not to mention I'm bout to be paying for my own insurance, tags, and gas along with the day to day costs of college, need to quit playing in beanfields and driving into ditches on my way to school( even though it's fun and a good way to get the juices pumpin in the mornin)....better yet I need a steady part time job until summer when I can work full time on the lanscaping and mowing crew

I'm on my 2nd XJ. Sold my 2wd ranger in September 2011, to buy a lifted red 95 XJ. wheeled the **** out of it, bounced it off every tree around, laid it on its side, etc etc etc. parted out the engine, tcase, and transmission, then bought another XJ, and put my lift and tires on. I absolutely love my jeep(s) :) I don't regret selling my ranger at all. I got maybe 4 mpg more out of my ranger, but it was 2wd, so I was willing to sacrifice the mpg, to drive what I wanted. so being in highschool, like you, and having trouble scraping $$$ to get by, I'd say a jeep is definitely a great option. plenty of aftermarket options, and they handle some crazy ****.
Bought this one with a 6" short arm, 33's, AA SYE, 8k smittybuilt winch, winch bumper, etc (open diff's with 3.07's)..
parted the red one out, to build this one. 6" short arm, 33's, spartan d30 locker, welded c8.25, 3.55's. bumping up to 35's to run for a big wheeling trip in june, then may go up to 1ton's with 37's over the summer. but for now, I like it how it is, being my DD and wheeler.

----ing government, corporations, and everyone that has to do with this bullcrap.
6 bucks a gallon is absurd. Keep it at 4 bucks and give us ethanol free while you're at it.
