My 1990 ranger does not have any heat at the moment and so far I have changed t-stat,rad flush and new coolant,checked blend door and its working fine. The heat anticipator burned up 2 days after I got the truck but never had a chance to see if the heat worked before then. If I just replace the burned out part will I have heat or do I need to go further and replace the heat exchanger also? My truck came with factory air so replacing it will require pulling the dash,so if just replacing the heat amticipator will fix the problem it will save me alot of time.

 

by anticipator, do you mean the heater control valve thats in the heater hose?

If you think it is that, bypass it (brass fitting) and see what that gets you. As far as the heater core, could be plugged. I'd disconnect the lines and back flush the heater core using a garden hose and see where that gets you. Also, make sure you don't have an air-lock in the heater core after messing with that cooling system so much...

 

I have flushed the core forgot to add that. I think all the anticipator is is a heat strip,after it burned up I lost all fan speeds but high.

The core is not plugged cause the water flowed through without a problem.

 

Ah, the blower motor resistor. That shouldn't really affect the vent temperature. Nothing like 'no heat', just lack of fan position. What about the control valve I did mention. Have you messed with that at all?

Because unless that heater core is completely plugged up, you should have heat just fine. Unless there is an airlock, the control valve isnt letting coolant into the radiator, or the thermostat temp is too low.

 

I drove it all summer 20 miles one way and never had a over heating prob.....temp guage dont work but the t-stat is 180 or 190 degree stat.

I really dont know this has stumped me,it sucks not having heat on those cold mornings.

 

If the blower is blowing, the blend door is blending, and you have coolant, then the only thing left is the valve that shuts off coolant flow to the heater core. This valve closes when the control **** is in OFF or MAX AC. If the valve is stuck closed, then you will never get hot coolant to flow through the heater core. It is accessible from under the hood where the heater core hoses meet the firewall.

There is no such thing as a heat anticipator. That thing you describe is the resistor that changes the blower motor speed. No relation to your problem.

How do you know your engine is warming up if the temp gauge is broken? Are you sure it is broken?

 

The rad hoses both get good and hot so i know its getting to operating temp.

Uh. Heh. Well I know why you aren't getting any heat.

You see those two empty holes to the right of the blower? That is where the hoses to your heater core used to go in and out. You have no hoses going to the heater core, which explains why you don't seem to get any heat. Someone took them out.

See that hose with the T on it? I bet the empty side of the T has a plug in it, right? Those hoses USED TO go to the heater core. But they were removed and bypassed.

 

Ha..I was in the process of replacing the core today when I took those pics. I was just fixin to run to the parts house and get the core.....anyways,I replaced the core,grabbed my thermometer and drove around for awhile. The heat was putting out a max of 120 degrees which is good enough for me.

Did you also notice that I took the resistor off too?

If you just replaced the core, I'd say the old one was just clogged up with crap.
